RAM running slow
Hey all, I just wrapped up my first build (yay!) and my ram (G.SKILL Ripjaws V @3200Mhz) is only running at 2133 according to the BIOS. What is needed to get it running at the advertised 3200? I would like to have it running at high speed, as I am using Ryzen. Thanks!

You may have to manually set the RAM speed through using the BIOS. I had similar issues until I did that.

We may also need your motherboard manufacturer, and model number...just so we can help you farther in that interface.

Select an XMP/AMP profile in BIOS.

load the XMP/AMP profile. Setting up RAM manually can cause a lot of issues espacially if you dont know what you do. you have to set all the right voltages bus speeds, multiplier and CAS timings right. With XMP it is a button click.


We dont need to know your Motherboards name or modell numebr for Ryzen. Unless it is A320 it is always the same:

Bios -> Advanced memory Settings -> Load XMP/AMP Profile 1


(PS: same for every Intel Z, X and H Motherboards and B's cant OC even through XMP)

If it's the issue I had with my RAM, manually configuring the RAM is the only option. OP already uses XMP profile on Auto...which according to you two should work...But doing that changes nothing. The RAM is DDR4-3200 so they need to manually set it as such.

Manually configuring the RAM on my motherboard merely means selecting the type of RAM one is running. It ranges from DDR4-800 to DDR4-3200

If XMP/AMP didn't work the PC wouldn't even POST with it enabled. OP simply hasn't selected an XMP/AMP profile yet.

No you dont use XMP profile on Auto. Auto is just 2133Mhz defaults to allow you to boot into your pc no problems. XMP is something you have to enable if you want to run your RAM's at the speed/timings you purchased for. Simply enabling the following profile will solve the ''issue''.

The way you and Tacoshy have instructed the OP is to use the automatic XMP profile detection...That's always set to the type of RAM a person uses by default. Since it's not registering automatically, choosing it manually through advanced settings is the only option. As I have pointed out, doing it manually in advanced mode gives the user a list. Since the OP is using DDR4-3200 RAM, they will need to select it using the advanced chipset configuration menu in their bios.

That's my point. I never said anyone should. If you read carefully, you'll notice that I am not the one telling them to do that.

By default, some motherboards use JDEC in stead of XMP profiling. But that's a whole other thread, and isn't necessary to explain here.

For the one millioned time.. check your facts.. Don't start another pointless argument about something you clearly don't know anything about.

The PC does not automatically run the RAM at the rated speeds. And if it does you enabled a EZ XMP jumper on the mobo.

Have you ever tried manually overclocking RAM? It's a little bit more difficult then selecting a clockspeed. Timings, voltages etc.. all that you need to set correctly. That is why we have XMP.

If your RAM has XMP support you should enable it. Your RAM is not rated to run at 2133 but at 3200 (for example) and not to even mention the timings. Running RAM without an XMP profile could result in your system running unstable.

Update the BIOS and try again.

Since you are running a 2400g the currently BIOS is probably recent but it's still worth a try.


If that doesn't work return the RAM, make sure the RAM you get is supported by the motherboard. Ryzen can be very picky about which RAM it likes.

Updated BIOS from v4.60 to 4.70, the newest version. Same thing, didn't POST. I know this ram works w/ ryzen, I have seen it used in other builds with the same CPU.

Are you sure it's the same RAM? That it looks the same and carries the same name doesn't mean it's the same RAM. What is the exact model?
