Would a FX 6300 be a good upgrade from a AMD Phenom ii x4 910? Updated

Decided we only get one mother, and this will most likely be the last pc she will ever need, so I went all out crazy and gave her my back up gaming rig, bought her a 2TB SSHD with a 500GB SSD

So she now has a FX 8350, Gigabyte G1 GTX 980, 16GB ddr4 ram, 212 evo cpu cooler, 750 watt psu, custom case, Gigabyte 990FXA-ud5 Mobo and I picked up some cables so she can toggle between her old pc and the new one without having to use 2 monitors and keyboard.

I know its overkill for her needs, but I dont feel like redoing her pc in 2 years, this should last her atleast 5 or 6, since she just does facebook and light editing and farmvile type games.

My mother has an old pc that she refuses to build a new one, but she is in her 60s, so she is set in her ways.

I have a I7 6700K and a FX 8350 that I use and I dont want to part with mine, but I have an older FX 6300 that was only used for a month. I also have a GTX 760 to pair with it.


The things my mother does is plays Farmville and SUpercity on facebook and does some light video editing of photos.

Since I already have a cpu, motherboard and gpu, I figured I could just get a case, some new ram, hard drive and PSU and a heatsink, and dvd drive and she would be set with as very nice upgrade.


Thoughts? I am trying to save a few bucks by using some of my own hardware, but she is not a gamer, just trying to update her old windows 7 hp pc with something slightly newer.

Probably not worth it if you need to buy the things you mentioned, but I thought you could just use her existing parts in her PC and not buy any of those.

But I guess if you proceed, you can upgrade the Fx6300 to your 8350 when you are done with it later

An ssd maybe a better upgrade if not already done.

She doesnt want to gut her current pc. My FX 8350 wont be an upgrade option for her. It doubles as my server.

I have the GPU and CPU and 8gb of ram. All I need to do is invest about $150 to get a case, a psu, and will most likely get a new mobo, as the one I had was a cheap one, and dont wanna do her like that. Biostar mb is trash.

but with the hardware I have, for less than $200 I can upgrade her current toaster to a microwavable oven LOL.

I am just curious on how much performance increase the 6300 would have. Takes like 5 minutes to boot and another 5 minutes to open Magix Photo editor.

Since you have most of the parts, and all the things she doing is light work tasks, this would be a large upgrade to her really.

FX 6300 about 40% > over the Phenom ii x4 910 threaded performance. With the 760 over whatever GPU she using now, if I had to take a guess maybe the 4xxx/5xxx series from ATI, or 8xxx/9xxx GT/GS series from Nvidia, would be a mass improvement. 8GB of RAM is a great idea to go for as well.

Thanks I was looking to find out the performance increase. And yeah she has intergrated 45XX something by ati with like 256 or 512mb ram, Dont recall. Its all stock. I dont resell my old pc stuff on ebay, I'd never get a fraction of the value, so it all just piles up in the computer closet, with about 8 or 9 other old or half gutted pcs lol. I have a bit of an addiction of never tossing my old junk out.

Atleast now I can clean my closet and make my mother smile. Cheers

I also have a habit of not throwing old junk away as well, no shame in that. I wish you the best when you finish that build for your mother, and she most likely will like the speed increase, but also forgot one thing, slap a SSD, and she love the much faster boot time, and such.

AM4 (B350 or X470) Motherboard
Ryzen 2nd-Gen series of CPU (2400G or better)
Updated BIOS revision
DDR4 RAM (2666 for B350, 3200 for X470); 2x8GB minimum

I'm a big meanie I guess, I only bumped up my Dads pc to a x3 450 Athlon this year which is still plenty fast for his non gaming needs.

Yeah I have 75% of the hardware, so no point spending a ton of money when I can upgrade her. I was just curious about the fx 6300 performance which is a 40% increase i was told

Yes FX6300 would be a nice step up from that sorely dated Phenom II.
It would be one thing if it was say a Phenom II 965 with a decent Motherboard + Cooler; as 965 can usuaully run very stable OC'ed to around 4+ Ghz and then be easily on-par with FX-6300

But given what CPU you'd be upgrading for him/her, yes if you just have that FX CPU laying around, put it in there, it will help.

Just know that even a $60-70 6th or 7th Gen Intel Pentium will be faster overall compared to FX-6300

Yeah, but I'd then need to buy an Intel motherboard and ram for that motherboard. I already have 70% of the parts for the old amd build. The rest are on the way from amazon.
