Dead motherboard ?
Hi. My friend at work, he says his motherboard has died. However, it does boot up, just won’t accept his keyboard and mouse. He claims to have tried another keyboard and mouse, to no avail.

So he took it to the shop to get repaired and they said he needs a new motherboard.

Is this really the case? Or could I just order him a new ps/2 port and send him on his way?

Motherboards can fail, but it's rare. More likely it's just a port failure.
So you agree, it could just be the ps2 ports? I’ll order him some and see if it works.

I would. They're not exactly an expensive part, not compared to a new motherboard. So you may as well try it and see if that solves the problem, there's nothing lost if it doesn't.
Great.. I was hoping this would be the case, as I didn’t want to source him a new motherboard. He can’t really afford to upgrade all his ram and it’s getting quite pricey to find a direct replacement. I’ve found similar boards that’ll be fine with his CPU, it’s just a money game.
Put it this way; I would be genuinely surprised if this was a motherboard failure. I've been a gamer for 15 years and that's never happened to me, or anybody I've met.

Thanks man. Just spoke to him. Ordered him a part. Will update next Friday. Thanks
Thank you kind sir

I knew in my mind a dead motherboard wouldn’t just do that, I was certain. I figured if a motherboard died nothing would even come up on the screen

Maybe not that bad, but you'd notice a lot of other problems.

Thought so.
Thanks man
Would help if the problem was actually trouble-shooted.
Try resetting the CMOS, try different devices. Try USB perhaps too.

Done the CMOS.

It did seem to be my mistake that I thought he had tried the ps2 ports, he hasn’t, he doesn’t have a keyboard and mouse for ps2 ports he does it via USB ports.

I’ve ordered him a new set of USBs so hopefully that will fix it.

I’d have gave him a ps2 keyboard and mouse but I don’t own one and it’s more expensive for those two than the USBs that I’ve found.

Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for your reply.

Why do people still use PS/2 equipment? The actual advantages are slight, and surely they're offset by the technical advantages of modern USB peripherals?
I don’t know if I didn’t make it clear. I made a mistake in thinking he was talking about the ps2 ports. He wasn’t. He uses USB.

However, I am too in question of why would you have ps2 peripherals.
Are there even modern ps2 products?
