Looking for GPU recommendations on an older AMD 1100t rig
So, I've got an older rig. I put it together around 2010(ish) and I don't really have any reason to rebuild the whole thing. I have a quality SSD already, so loading times are still very acceptable. I'm not a big gamer by any stretch, but I do like the occasional racing game. I've enjoyed titles such as: NFS Porsche Unleashed, Track Mania, Asphalt 8, Burnout Paradise, etc and am running into GPU bottlenecks partilly from a lack of DX12 support.

Here is my rig:
AMD Phenom II x6 1100t (currently not overclocked and running at 3.3GHz)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 that won't let my CPU temps excede 45C even during a Prime 95 pull.
16G (4x4G) G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 @ 1333MHz (also not overclocked)
Nvidia GTX 460se
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Samsung Pro-series something or another SSD for boot and programs
2x 1TB platters for movies, backups, and other junk
Nice-n-hefty Corsair PSU
blah blah blah....

Obviously, my rig is older, but it's been rock solid and does just fine for everything except newer racing titles and 4k 60fps streams. I would like to play some of the newer racing titles such as Forza Morotsport/Horizon, Project Cars 2, etc (though I can make the Project Cars 1 and 2 demo run over 30 fps on my current rig at 1080p which I found somewhat surprising). I would ultimately like to play these (and potentially newer) racing titles in 4k some day. I'm not sure if that's possible on my current CPU platrofm or not. I get the general impression that racing games are much more GPU intensive than CPU intensive as is resolution scaling, so I may be ok on that front with a reasonable GPU, but please correct me if I'm wrong on that one.

I'm just looking for recommendations to match a new GPU to my current CPU as best I can in terms of racing titles and general video streaming. I'm wondering about a GTX 970, 980, 1050, 1050 ti, or even 1060. I figure anything beyond that is overkill for my rig and I would have to basically rebuild the whole system to take advantage of anything 1070 and beyond for racing titles.

980 or 1070 is about the highest you could go really.

If 1060 6GB is within budget range, that would be fine.
However, an outdated and slow CPU like that will still hold you have in many CPU-intensive games. Like TotalWar Warhammer 1 or 2 for example; something that needs a beefy CPU for AI

Probably best to take the bull by the horns:

I would throw in a 1050 ti, or a 1060.

1060 6GB would probably be best to continue Gaming well @ 1080p
It should last you many years worth of use, even if you should later decide to upgrade that AM3 platform over to something much more powerful and updated; such as Intel 7th Gen / 8th Gen, or AMD Ryzen platforms. Such a GPU as these suggestions would further improve should you upgrade MB+CPU+DDR4 RAM in the future.

I can say from experiences, going from 570 to 680 to 970 were nice big worthy jumps.
Going from a 460 up to around a 1050 Ti 4GB or 1060 6GB would be extremely good overall and well worth it.

I would say 1060 6GB. That'll give you a huge upgrade on what you have now, and it'll handle all of those games comfortably at 1080P. While also giving you years of future potential.

Although you may want to hold-off on buying one, Nvidia's probably going to launch new GPU refference cards in July and that's bound to effect the price. You may be able to snag a bargain.

FX 8350 and anything above a GTX760 and you will be happy.

Buying an old GPU is a terrible idea. Especially now with the cryptocurrency situation.

Spending 350 bones for a gtx1060 6gb is a terrible idea for a card that released for 240 bones. Crypto is dying even RX580's are back in stock. Time to sit back and wait as long as you have a working GPU.

Thanks for all the votes! Sounds like 1050 ti and 1060 are out in the lead. The 1060 isn't really all that much more than the 1050 ti, so I'll probably just go that route. I'll hold off on buying anything for a while until this crypto boom implodes and prices come back down to sane levels. Just trying to get my head around which one I should spring for when the time is right.

Remember to get the 6gb 1060 not the 3gb one.

For sure! Looks like the 1060 6G cards are starting at $300, which is $50 over msrp. Hopefully these will trend down once the 1180 is realeased and the crypto boom collapses.

I definitely wouldn't bother with the GTX1050ti because it's normally behind the R9 280x.

GTX1060 6GB would be a good fit.

I have the 1050 Ti currently. If you're happy with 1080p at 30-60 fps, then it can run just about any game at or near max settings. However, you'll probably be looking for another upgrade in the next year or two.

The market will always go up and down; buy when you are ready to buy, regardless of the pricing. Otherwise you'll be waiting forever.

Push your old reliable 1100T. Watch video on ocing
For GPU I agree, either the 8GB RX580 or 6GB 1060
