Netflix is making my computer stutter!
I noticed it yesterday that for whatever reason, netflix is making my computer stutter. This is making movies and series un-enjoyable.
It happens in both chrome and app, so I reckon the problem persists on other browsers as well.
I've attempted to reinstall the latest GPU driver, which clearly didn't work.
For those who wonders, my internet and computer is more than capable and should certainly be able to run without any problems.

Two things i would try (haven't been mentioned i think)

1. Reinstall Silverlight
- Navigate to Programs & Features and uninstall "Microsoft Silverlight"
- Install fresh Silverlight from https://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/

2. Adjust audio devices (Helped me in the past with Netflix)
- Go to Windows Sound menu
- Under Playback find your active playback device and open properties
- In the Supported Formats tab disable all coded formats (DTS, Dolby, WMA)

I was under the impression silverlight went by the roadside with IE and no longer needed for Netflix.
Netflix hasn't use Silverlight in years; its using HTML5 just like Twitch

And use Chrome

Hey guys!

I have the same issue. I noticed computer stutters even when netflix movie is paused... It affects whole computer. CPU / GPU loads are between 0 - 3% when stuttering occurs. It happens like every 5th second. You can easily see it by opening Netflix movie and drawing circles with your mouse, movie paused. I dont believe its my computer specs that is too low Netflix...

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X 8Core 16CPU ~3.8Ghz
32GB 3200Mhz DDR4
Nvidia EVGA GTX 1080 Hydrocopper
2x 512GB M.2 Samsung 850 SSD
Steelseries 850 headphones

Youtube work,
TwitchTV work,
Netflix stutters // Windows 10 netflix app stutters also ( I Noticed they both use same javascript player ),
HBO nordic stutters,
Games work.

Windows 10 (1709 OS Build 16299.402)
Nvidia drivers 397.31

Btw. I also have linux installation on my computer and there I cannot experience the stutter, so this is definitely software issue

What I have tried so far:

Installing latest Realtek audio driver,
Installing latest BIOS,
disabling windows virus protection and firewall,
Using different browsers, Firefox stutter same as chrome, using Edge mouse works, but movie does not...
Enabling AMD Ryzen power plan,
Disabled all Audio enhancements for all audio outputs,

On my low end laptop there is no stuttering...

I have 3 monitor setup and tried unplugging all but one. That did not fix the issue either :-(

I cannot reproduce the issue in Windows 10 safe mode, this must be driver issue

Apparently the DRM used in Edge/UWP App doesn't work fine with some connections like DVI or HDMI in some old monitors and adapters like hdmi or DP switches

Some people reporting that using a diferent screen or connecting direct solves the issue. I have not tried because i have no spare, but it's something else to try at least.

That would explain why one of the guys above also have issues using HBO heavy DRM, and not other streaming services.

Little reference here on a case of a user using intel from microsoft.

+1 Edge supposed to be faster adnd better yet I can load the msn.com site, click my inbox then select an email on via Firefox in the same time it takes Edge to load msn.com or hotmail directly......and thats when I open edge before i click on Firefox :steamhappy:

I have found solution for my issues. I have triple monitor setup and I noticed that when netflix is in the "main monitor" marked in windows settings it works without any issues. Same with HBO. My television is connected using HDMI so when I watch stream services I need to mark that connection as main monitor every time. This work around makes it play it smooth.

This is a known Nvidia driver issue, it started a while back after a driver update and Nvidia has yet to release a fix for it... 6 months later.
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1048828/geforce-drivers/netflix-and-amazon-stuttering/8/?offset=116#5884887
This is also a 4 month old thread that was most likely already resolved.
waant really resolved no
TL;DR the whole thread, but I tried rolling back my drivers as mentioned on page two and it fixed my issue. FX-8350 with GTX-1080Ti

this fixed all isues with chrome and netflix for me:

1. Close Chrome.
2. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\
2. Go into the folder in there with a version number, mine was called 71.0.3578.98.
3. Delete the WidevineCdm folder.
4. Open Chrome, navigate to chrome://components and click "Check for Updates" on the Widevine Content Decryption Module, which installs version 4.10.1146.0.
5. Close Chrome.
6. Navigate to the folder Euron909 mentioned %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\WidevineCdm
7. Rename the folder in there from 4.10.1146.0 to 4.10.1346.0
8. Open Chrome and test.
