Are Optical Sensors replacable in modern mice?
Put simply, my Logitech G900 is toast. The Optical Sensor has failed in some way, and that's causing inconsistent cursor movement and a lot of cursor skip. It's bad enough that I can't game with it.

Anyway. Could I theoretically buy a second-hand G502 for peanuts, rip out it's sensor and install it in the G900? Or would that not be practical/possible? Or should I just replace the dratted thing with something more reliable?

Thanks.

It does help and I do appreciate it, but it's definitely something with the mouse itself. I've already checked WiFi - everything in my house runs on a higher frequency. And since I haven't bought anything WiFi connected between the mouse working perfectly and the mouse misbehaving, that doesn't seem likely.

What I have been able to isolate, is that CPU and Memory usage aren't factors, that the software is working as intended, that another Optical mouse with essentially the same sensor works fine on my pad, and that the sensor isn't visibly damaged or dirty. And that the battery life is only reaching 66% of what was claimed for this model.

Have you tried this mouse on another computer?

A little over half battery capacity is more than enough for an RMA in my book anyways lol

RMA it. It might be a fault in specific version of the G900 and Logitech would replace it regardless of warranty.
It is probably a Pixart 3366 made only for Logitech the sensor is not really plug and play.

^This. If it still under warranty, do it, if not ask how much to fix it.
Did you check thoroughly for (razor) thin hairs near the sensor?

I did. Nothing - no hairs or other debris.

At this point I'm looking at alternative mice, and weighing the ethics of RMAing the mouse and selling the replacement online.

It's only a few months old it obviously had a defect, it happens to the best of brands.

I would do an RMA and if Logitech gives you a hassle or it's an unpleasant experience sell it and get a different mouse, if it's a smooth RMA keep it. I would not give up on such a sexy mouse so soon. I'll be buying one as soon as my g700s dies but it doesn't seem to want to give up the ghost.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Ultimately it can't justify the price. What you're getting for $149 is a very basic Tournament style mouse with a 102 Gram weight and a 12,000 DPI optical sensor. It only has two functional macro keys, and nothing else to recommend it.

A Corsar M65 Pro uses effectively the same sensor under a different badge, only weighs 4 Grams more and actually has superior software and a more comfortable grip. Where it really gets embarrassing, is that the Corsair also feels more solidly built.

If the G900 cost $79 AUD it would be among the best gaming mice ever produced. But at $149 it can't justify it's own existance. It's a luxury mouse with the performance, features and feel of a tournament piece costing half as much.

If you want to buy an expensive mouse, I can recommend the Asus Spatha. I have one for work, and it really is worth the money. You get excellent software, beautiful build quality and easily the most comfortable and ergonomic grip I've ever held. The only downside is the nearly 200 gram weight - if the Spatha was light it'd be unbeatable. But as it stands, it's a little too heavy for me to use effectively, it's inertia pulls my aim off target.

I agree the price is a little high, it's going for $140+ in Canada.

Got mines for $30 CAD off a friend who got two in the mail. The $30 was for shipping from US to Canada...

It may not even be the sensor.

Could be a radio issue. Do you have WiFi, or is there WiFi nearby? The G900 runs its radio at 2.4ghz, so can interfere/be interfereed with WiFi frequencies.

Do you have an Android phone? There is a free application called "WiFi Analyzer" that'll show you what channels all local WiFi frequencies are tuned.

Cellphones can also cause interference, so keep them away from the desk. Microwaves, routers, Bluetooth, etc. Basically anything wireless can possibly cause interference, so be aware.

Hope this helps.

I have :)

Right now it's a matter of when rather than if I RMA it. And what I get to replace it with. I appreciate the help, so thanks to all who posted here. I think we can call this thread closed.
Mine has never let me down, probably bad luck. My only gripe with it was the lack of rubber. I was used to rubberized mice after couple SteelSeries Rivals, but in couple days I got used to holding a fully plastic mouse again anyway.

IMO, it's still a good choice if money is not a factor. One of the best palm grip mice out there.

Maybe. I still think it's overpriced for what you get, especially the build quality.

At this point I'm planning to replace it with a Swiftpoint Z. The words that come to mind to describe the design are "bonkers" "hideous" and "goblin" but it's built to peak standards, has some brilliant ideas and has battle-tested internals. Plus I can return it for a refund anytime within the next month, so I may as well try it.
Just RMA the mouse; Logitech has good support and after a few minutes of explaining how the mouse is defective, they should be able to issue an RMA and send you a replacement. I've done that plenty of times just to gain me an extra mouse. They really don't care cause you can only RMA that serial# once. And it's not like you ship them the old mouse.
