Important questions about new bought card Sapphire Radeon RX 580 ( not installed right now) Windows 8.1 and windows 10
Hello,

i will try to keep things short.
I just bought a new Graphic Card the Sapphire RX 580 8GB to replace my 4 years old Radeon R9 4GB (she is getting slowly an old lady ;( ). I was mislead by the information on the website where i bought it (thinking the Card was compatible with windows 8.1 but actually it was the Radeon Crimson edition live programme being compatible with W7,8,8.1 and 10.)

The RX 580 card is only compatible with Windows 7 and the Spyware / Bloatware Windows 10. Windows 8.1 is not supported because.....AMD decided so. I still don´t understand why.

Now to the deal: putting the card yesterday evening in my computer made it unrecognizable. I thought the Windows 7 and 10 only compatibilityx was a joke...well it wasn´t. I saw on a forum that it may be possible to make the RX 580 works under windows 8.1 but i would need to tweak the computer and i am not wanting to mess my computer up.

After several researches my 2 options:
- either i send the card back and money back and i keep my Windows 8.1.
- or i do the fatal upgrade to windows 10 and i can profit from the RX 580.

Problem is, i saw what it implies to upgrade to Windows 10 (Our european GDRP is not satisfied with Windows 10 practices), especially tremendous bandwith loss and forced updates...can all this be bypassed?

Does anyone here really advise this Windows 10 upgrade just for the RX 580 (i hesitate but i tend to think it´s not worth it ) or can anyone advise me on a good graphic card working under good circumstances under Windows 8.1 ?

thank you for your help!

AMD indeed dropped support for Windows 8 almost a few years ago due to it having a miniscule market share compared to Windows 7 and 10.

Either switch to Windows 10 or Linux. Those are the only options worth considering since Windows 7 will lose support in about 9 months.

The Nvidia 1000 series still has support for Windows 8, the 1600/2000 series does not.

Just install win 10 and do some googling about turning things off .

This so much.
I switched to Windows 10 the day it released. Never had a single problem in 3 years.
Neither with unwanted downloads nor game comp-ability or anything else.
You can turn off nearly all the "evil" spy functions during installation. (fun fact, 90% off that stuff is already in Windows 7/8 they just dont tell you about it, like in 10)
For greater tinfoil insurance download one of the countless programs that disables pretty much everything in Windows 10, even the automatic updates.

Have you seen the source code of the Windows calculator Microsoft open sourced? It has so much spying crap in it, everything you do with it is sent off to Microsoft..

You can request not to be spied upon. Windows is proprietary, you don't know what it does so why are you people so sure of what you are saying?

And don't forget that Windows loves to reset these settings you changed after almost every update.

Windows is datamining everything and you have no control over it. People shouldn't be using this proprietary garbage anymore, Windows should have died in the 90's together with all other proprietary crap.

And don't forget "People have viewed over X billion photos on Windows 10 since release", Microsoft proudly parading around with their "We monitor everything" crap..

3.3% is still pretty low

you can mod the ini file to add gpu support to 8/8.1

win 7/8/8.1/10 are the same at their core

Understandable feelings, but do you know your ISP is doing the same as with every other website you visit including Steam, and a VPN can only do so much. If you have a cellphone, even a basic one, they know where you are as they track you with that as well. We are living in a society where there is little privacy when it comes with new tech.

Custom DNS fixes the ISP issues mostly, now they only know the IPs I visit not the URLs.

Rarely do I carry my phone with me. And it has a custom ROM flashed on it without Google services.

I would look into some of the privacy things you have to do with windows 10, you have to do them manually but you can get rid of a lot of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ windows 10 tries to do by default.

Or hell, make the jump to Linux. There is more native support for Linux gaming than ever, especially with the steam proton thing or whatever it's called. A couple distros out there also geared towards gamers with the drivers they include.

If you really wana keep away from the globalist agenda for a while longer, I'd go with linux.

I have had a glimpse of the architecture and usage of linux when i was around 12 or 13 years old. Since then, i went all Windows through XP, 7 and 8 + 8.1. It may be quite hard for me i guess, to make the jump into Linux.
Globalist agenda or not, we are totally being spyed on anyway.
The only thing i was worried about was global System instability and the not so "ethical" forced Win 10 updates and graphic compatibilities (i saw than the next update in May, may actually wipe out Cortana and make the UI more accessible which seems ok for me). I´m still thinking about it but i may get a copy of win 8.1 before i go Win 10.

Anyway i will try to do all this in a month since i have exams and i don´t want to lose my files i work on right now if the " Win 10 migration" messes up all my precious files.

thanks for the answers!

Depending on what GUI you install, and considering how much native support (and nearly native support) games have on linux these days, it might be less of a jump than you'd think. I'm not sure when the last time you messed around with linux was, but I can say it has come leaps and bounds since even 5 years ago.

For example, Manjaro comes with steam installed and much more recent drivers out of the box.
