High-end PC for silent gaming / streaming : Coffee Lake or Skylake-X?
Hello dear steam mates,

I want to build myself a completely new high-end rig, that is capable to easily & smoothly do streaming and gaming (2560x1440 @ 60Hz) while staying as silent as possible. GPU is going to be a RTX 2080. Only thing I'm totally undecided is wether to go with an i9-9900K @ 4.6 - 4.8GHz all cores or an i9-9920X @ 4.6 - 4.8GHz all cores.

I know that Skylake-X benefits from better overclock results and has quad channel support, but: is it worth it or will the coffee lake CPU be sufficient enough to do the job?

Octacore with HT, and very high IPC - 9900K is more than sufficient.

HEDT like Skylake-X is not really betetr for gaming. Its has other advantages for professional work or VM that profit from quad channel, AVX512 and more then 64GB RAM. Befor I would go with an i9-9920X I would choose a delidded i9-7920X. Same CPU but better thermals. The 9920X is just a 7920X (was even recognized by BIOS and CPU-Z earlier on as this) but sodlered. Soldered actually sounds good but it isnt as it required to more then double the silicon layer of the die. that way it still is outperformed in thermal by delidded CPU's.

wow, thanks for the info @ tacoshy.

Didn't know that. So I'll be changing my selection to either i9-9900K or i9-7920X. Of course both would be delidded and with liquid metal equipped. Cooling would be a complete custom watercooling.

I9 9900k is soldered. So you cant delid it.

Sorry, my bad, I gave wrong / insufficient information. If going for the i9-9900K I will get that "der8auer bundle" from caseking: i9-9900K CPU delidded + OC-Frame (no IHS, direct cooling). I'd like to post the link to that but I believe it's forbidden on steam to post links, isn't it?

of course you can delidd it - Casekign and Der8auer does it all day. Its mroe difficault though as you first need to heat up the CPU to make the solder softer, removed the IHS and then sanding the die to remove more then half of the silicion layer befor reapplyign liquid metal.

No it is not. However I wouldnt do direct Die coolign unless you absolutly know what you do. A Normall delidded CPU will be a betetr solution for msot ppl but still not needed. YOu can overclock still just your thermals will limit you faster.
Unless you're good in overclockign and want to do a hardcore overclocking it makes no sense to buy or delidd a soldered CPu yourself (high advice against it in delidding soldered CPU yoruself unless you know how to delidd it).

Ryzen 3000 series will likely be the best option for a silent streaming computer, but you'd have to wait a few months.

Based on the demo at CES, it could use substantially less power than the 9900k. Less heat means the fans can operate at slower speeds, which means less noise.

Im not retarded. I know you can delid it.
I just said cant for lack of better words and didnt want to drone on about useless information that wouldnt benefit him.

Its pointless to try and delid a soldered cpu because you would do more damage than good.

Intel are supposedly announcing new 9th gen cpus May 15. Mobo manufacturers have made bios changes. The cpus are a revision of the current ones, exactly what has been revised is unknown. Some have lower power usage. So it will be interesting to see how performance of the new cpus with lower TDP compares to the current ones. As gaming usually doesn't load up all cores they might be just as fast but at lower temperature and less noise.

they just have lower clockspeeds or lacking a igpu (which is rarely used) they wont be any better then whats available

thanks so far for all the input guys. But still the question remains : will an i9-9900K be suffcient enough for silent gaming and streaming or will a i9-7920X be better? Is it worth spending a lot more money for an Skylake-X system?

(I do believe that just because one has the money to spend an such systems, he shouldn't necessarily do it if he doesn't need it. You know, it's like buying a Porsche but only to drive to your next local store with 30 km/h. That's not what a Porsche is made for :-) )

Neither are "silent" though. Especially i9 9900K. That thing put out a lot of heat and with the small IHS, the only way of cooling is cranking up your fan speed.

if you want a quiet system look for a T cpu it has lower clockspeeds but its tuned for performance while also using much less power as well as generating less heat (that or just underclock what youre getting)
tacoshy 19 ABR 2019 a las 8:48 a. m.
Of course you can make an i9-9900K dead silent even when highly overclocking. Only depends on your case and the cooler. Get a Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic with a 360 Corsair or NZXT AiO Cooler on top and use all 9 Fan slots with Corsair ML120 AT lowest speed. Even keeps HEDT super cool and silent.

Besides the i9-7920X runs way hotter. It won't give even close the same Gaming performance even not when streaming. It has nothing to offer for gamers. Gamers need high IPC and not high core count nor AVX512 or quad channel.
Like I already said, it's purely for professional works that are way more core demanding then gaming or streaming.

Underclocking does not lower heat. The Main reason for heat is voltage. If you want to produce less heat you undervolt. Ppl that know how to overclock even can overclock while undervolting most of the times.

A T-CPU sucks for gaming performance espacially streaming.

"Underclocking does not lower heat." everything you have ever said is officially null and void if you think something like this, of course, it will lower temps and yes lowering the voltage does help lower temps too, but it is not like you can't reduce the voltage while underclocking

plus the 20X0 line has better encoding which helps remove cpu usage while streaming
