Does getting a better wifi adapter affect your ping?
My internet lags whenever someone else in my family is playing video games.

We have a VDSL/FIBRE Dual band ac1600 modem router connected to a modem (idk if when its connected to a modem it will slow the wifi down) which reaches speeds up to 950mbps down and 450 up

I currently use a 802.11n wifi usb adpater, would it be reasonable to invest into an ac wifi adapter and are there any recommendations?

Thank you.

QoS (Quality of service) functionality in your modem such that a certain level of your total bandwidth is assigned to your device and the rest to the other household devices.

is it possible for me to change the QOS?

depends on the modem.

you can post the exact brand/model of your modem router and from what ISP.
maybe someone here can point out the exact QoS settings.

Can you use an modem router on connected to a modem?

qos is normaly used from modem - isp connections not lan side
if your isp connection is near the gigabit speeds, qos wont help since thats faster than n lan/wifi devices can reach

most isps only allow 1 modem at a time
you should get a dedicated modem and separate dedicated router

if the isp connection is really that fast, you should invest in 10g lan devices, modem/router/switch/wired nics ect.. to make use of it

If at all possible, run a cable to do an end run around all the Wifi crap. Wifi is great for phones, tablets, casting devices, general laptop usage and so on, but if you need a good and steady ping in a house with more people, nothing beats a cable.

802.11n is a rather old standard and definitely something that can hold you back.
Still, getting a wired connection is usually the best solution as wifi is not a good choice for latency reliant connections due to interference.

Honestly, this.
Never game on wifi, take the extra time, route a cable from the router to your PC, if its done properly, you wont even notice it.

802.11N via usb wifi adapter, especially a cheap one that is single band, you'll be lucky to get 150mbps down

Get a decent Wireless AC 5ghz Pcie card with external antenna if u can

I tried using a pcie wifi card in the past but it was too close to my graphics card and i thought it might cause some problems and also I realised it couldn't go through the slot, but I didn't really try back to put it through the slot because i though i might break something

Have had good luck with the cheap ac600 adapters like this[www.amazon.com], combined with a desktop extension like this[www.amazon.com] to help with optimal placement / antenna tuning it’s a cheap way for get better WiFi connectivity

They are good for 20MB/s max if you get a good 5ghz connection

QoS is all about rules of what to do when you have run out of bandwidth. Don’t turn it on where it is not needed.

Would an ethernet cable be better? The current one im looking at is this : https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/computers-tablets/accessories/cables-chargers-and-adapters/endeavour-cvc2015-10-ethernet-cable-cat6-10m-black/prod140763.html

I have to have a long cable cause my modem router is in the other room

Miles better than wifi.
Like I said before, if you route it properly, you won't even notice it.

Yes absolutely a wired connection is always best, as previously mentioned. WiFi and powerline are always the last resort of a cable is not an option...
