RTX 2080ti & 1440p 120hz??
Should I wait to get a better card or should I buy an RTX 2080ti for a resolution like 3440x1440p at 120hz if I want to play Ultra settings on lots of triple A titles?

My current specs:
i7 6700K 4.38ghz overclocked
32gb ram (Corsair Vengeance)
GTX 1080FTW
OS:Windows 10

Might have to build a whole new machine just to upgrade my CPU because from what I understand my Maximus Hero VIII mobo can't go any higher than 6700K, and that sucks. That'll have to wait til another time. But I probably should just get a 2080ti, because I'm thinking about things long term...... which is why I was kinda waiting for Nvidia to put out their next line of cards and just get that instead, which would of course be pointless considering my CPU issue. Ugh, decisions, decisions.
The 6700k won't really hold the 2080ti back; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhudkF3GWgQ (i7-4770k with a 2080ti, at 4k and 1440p, no bottleneck.)

A lot of people under-estimate older parts, but there really hasn't been any performance change since Skylake (your CPU.) to 9th Gen (Coffelake refresh.)
There has only been more cores, and slightly higher clockspeeds.
With a light overclock, you can easily match it.

But you shouldn't even need to do that.
It will perform fine for what you want, because the higher res you go (In your case 3440x1440p, which is pretty close to 4k), the more it becomes GPU dependant, and you can run on a pretty trashy CPU.

You can do 1440p 144Hz with an RTX 2080 just fine, don't need to spend almost twice as much for an RTX 2080 Ti (Not GTX, GTX is 10 series and 16 series now, 20 series is RTX) when you're not playing at 4K.

Not to mention that, like the R7 2700X, the 6700K will hold back a 2080 Ti in more CPU intensive programs. It's a good CPU, but not that good by today's standards. The highest one should really go is a 1080 Ti or 2080.

I never realized that a regular 2080 would be powerful enough for a resolution that high at 120hz. Currently I'm playing Rage 2 and go max settings with my 1080, the frames fluctuate between 60 and 80, which obviously isn't gonna cut it for me.
I'd lean towards a 2080 Ti if u can afford it. This is rubbish talk about 6700K holding it back when it runs great even paired with a 4790K

My 4790k at 4.8GHz held my 1080ti back, so a 6700k will hold a 2080ti back from its max potential, will it make a big difference, not really, but it's there.

If you can afford it, go for the 2080ti 1440p ultra wide is pretty demanding so would benefit.

Two monitors next to eachother, but without the bezels in the middle.
Or even >super ultrawide or whatever it was called, basically 3 monitors without the bezel.

I wanted an ultrawide myself, but there wasn't a GPU that could push it (Max settings) 144fps (3440x)1440p
If you can afford it yes deffinitly go for it, some argue that you should only get the non-Ti version but I disagree. Although that being said you may want to overclock that CPU with a Z-series motherboard and good CPU cooler to prevent CPU bottlenecking for CPU intensive games. But none the less for 1440p 120Hz gaming a RTX 2080 Ti GPU is a great choice. (Plus you'll get 11GB of VRAM instead of 8GB, which will help in later years most likely.)

People are forgetting it's 3440x1440p, not 2560x1440p, much higher res. You will need a 2080ti if you want 100+FPS
Sure, the 2080 CAN do alright, but honestly, just get the best you can.

120hz takes alot more cpu
1440p20hz takes about as much gpu as 4k60hz
if the gpu is not at 100% the cpu is holding it back

6700k is 4ghz, with 4.2 turbo
that is not muc of an oc
put a good cooler on it and aim for 4.5-5ghz @80c

4.38ghz is an odd number for it, how are you overclocking?

That video was super helpful. As long as I can hit 120hz or near it with max or near max settings then I'm happy.

You probably won't hit 120hz at max. But, if you reduced AA (Which you don't need, because higher res.) and useless effects like depth of field, and motion blur, then you probably could.
