isn't it needed for hdmi audio though? there's a generic windows one yeah, but the nvidia one *seems* better but may just be placebo.
either way, nvidia's been breaking stuff none stop since time immemorial. if not for the huge dx11 overhead on amd gpus, I'd likely switch.
Which gpu and driver version are u using?
Now when comparing WinOS HD Audio driver for Realtek users, yes the OS one is lacking and you should use either the one from Realtek, or from the motherboard maker. Audio for hdmi/dp doesn't have much features and is a simple pass-through is all, which is why I'd never use the gpu audio on a gaming pc since it doesn't have good features
In my experience, without the Nvidia HD audio driver, I was unable to use Atmos over HDMI.
I don't think the Windows HDMI audio driver does anything but PCM.
