8GB vs 16GB ram debate...

Hello guys, me and my friend had a debate today of what's better off to get for the money. And he said 8GB ram is enough for everything, while I disagree and say 16GB can become much more helpful. I want to stream, edit and other stuff including playing a game x plane 11 which technically needs 16GB ram. He also said that people on steam don't know anything about PC's which is where I got all my info from to get the best for my money. Plus, I have more than enough money for 16GB ram and still says don't get it. So to settle this, get 16GB ram or not?

If you are only gaming and Internet browsing (but not at the same time) you can get away with only 8GB. But especially if you're streaming and video/photo editing I suggest atleast 16GB. Even when I'm not streaming, gaming, or video editing but just having muiple softwares open I sometimes use more than 8GB.

I have 32GB on my main desktop and right now, my browser alone is using 5.2GB* with just Steam running, Notepad open, one folder open and background programs and tasks running 10.2GB is in use. I do not mean this as an insult, but I have no idea how anyone could manage with just 8GB on their main system in this day and age.

while 8gb will be plenty for most games there are some that can use more, especially when mods are involved. 16gb is the minimum if you ask me

I have loads of stuff running in the background like discord, and I'm going to want to stream aswell. The main thing I just can't believe is that he said people on steam know nothing about what to get and give stupid ideas. When really, people like you are doing a great job bieng in this community everyday helping others out, thankyou for that!

Honestly you would be better off with the 16 so you're making the right choice. 8GB used to be the standard but now that games are getting more graphic intense and more apps/files are taking up so much more memory it's to a near impossible to play a game with stuff running in the background. But in my own opinion you really can't have too much ram on a system. I personally just max out how much ram my CPU and motherboard supports which is 32GB for me. Better to have more then not enough.

8gb is not enough for what you want.

As long as you have your pagefile on a SSD you can get away with less. But i have noticed that advanced gaming like Skyrim modding stresses even 16 GB with SSD. Once a game is running + browser + GIMP + HWiNFO + IRC Client + LibreOffice + 3D Editing software + tools to edit game files, things get hairy on 16 GB RAM.
Even right now my System Commit is already at 21.3 GB and i am not even gaming.

By now you can get something like the 16 GB G.Skill Aegis DDR4-3000 for under 90 USD. Nobody can tell me that 90 USD must be reduced to 45 to get something better for the money.

I don't really think it's a debate. 8GB can be enough, it was enough for a long time. But there's plenty of ways you can use more than 8GB of RAM, so having more RAM is preferable, and it's cheap. And no one gets points for only having 8GB of RAM. And 16GB is the typical next tier amount people imagine. The only reason why 16GB is recommended sometimes, is because 12GB of RAM is a weird number and it makes people feel confused and people fly off the handle thinking about running 8+4GB in single channel or flexmode.

And at some point you're definitely be happier than 16GB and no reason not to get it. So if someone is really railing against it, either they heard something quite a few years ago and seems to think it's true forever. Or they're only running 8GB and don't like the idea that might not be top tier anymore and are going to play the "necessity" card.

tbh I feel that 16GB is the minimum for gaming but if you're on a budget go for 8GB. Depending on your rig which is you want to stream go for 16GB.

I would just make sure you use at least 2 sticks it might be better than 1 stick whether using 8 or 16 gb total ram.

Get 16 or more. U generally can't stream, mutitask and game all on only 8GB ram
