So if Airflow is not restricted and isn't whats causing the 80C temps, you may want to look into properly reapplying thermal paste
That is, if you're comfortable doing so.
I should note, before i did the repaste with a SMALL overclock it was maxing out around 80C in demanding games, even when it was brand new. Which is what caused me to repaste, but i wasnt expecting the large difference it made, and all i used was the paste that comes with a Hyper 212 EVO, so it wasnt even the high end expensive paste that is available that made this happen.
So to answer your question, Yes, its normal. But only because of how the factory applies the paste in a manner that cooling is not maximized.
As its your first good GPU and if you arent comfortable redoing the thermal paste then raising the fan speed is the only thing you can really do, aside from trying to increase Case airflow.
