What monitor do you have though?
If you have a high refresh rate, and are running it at a lower refreshrate, then it wont be considered overclock since youre running at advertised speeds.
And there is noticeable difference between 60hz and 75hz.
(60 = 1 frame every 16.99ms, and 75 = 1 frame every 13.33ms. Its going to improve smoothness quite a bit, no where near as much as 120hz, but you should feel something. It would depend on what you play though, in fps games it would be quite apparent, where as games like dota or whatever, it would be minimal impact)
I have a Samsung s24f350. It's listed as 60hz. I've had it at 72hz for a day or so. I tried running get-edid in Linux but it didn't seem to read it right but I expect 72hz will be there.
I only play one game at a time so I only have one installed - Mad Max. In settings I can only choose 1920x1080@60hz so I guess, at least for this game, any benefits of 72hz instead of 60hz can't be experienced.
The only glitches I get are not related to the monitor... it's more to do with the game not supporting AMD cards on Linux.
I think i'll add a 144hz monitor to the hardware wishlist! I've read nothing but good things when compared to 60hz. They all seem to be TN though. I've read about VA but IPS/PLS seem to be best for colour. Unfortunately a new CPU (i7-7700k, before they sell out) and a GPU is above a new monitor! ££££
And VA has better blacks, IPS has better colours (but blacks suffer at times)
No real benefit to TN other than its cheap.
If you get a good TN panel it can have great colours and viewing angles. I personally dont see that much of a difference between ips and tn (thats been calibrated properly.)
As for the i7-7700k, unless you have a z170/z270 board already, its pointless buying it, the 8700k and 9700k are similar priced (iirc) and perform much better in every task.
And, its worth a look at what AMD is going to release/announce in 25 days. It should have more performance and cores than i7-7700k.
That's not the first time I've read that. I think the last time I read it the writer put it down as better than upgrading to an SSD! Might have been a bit OTT but still!...
Yup, Z170 with i3-6100 and R9 380. The i3 is good but it does struggle with some games. The 7700k can be bought for c£250 now. I've convinced myself it will be worth it because otherwise i'd need to buy a CPU for the same money (or more) and a motherboard.
I need to consider AMD CPUs on my next system. This is my first PC for a long time and I always used to buy Intel (CPUs and chipsets) so carried on with that trend. My last AMD CPU was an Athlon XP2000+!
(And SSD is the next best upgrade :) )
And yeah, that would be a pretty good upgrade, but youd need to make sure your bios is updated, otherwise the board wouldnt support the 7th gen cpu.
