Thinking of RTX upgrades
I've been thinking of upgrading my current gaming PC with an RTX card, especially given the inclusion of Wolfenstein Youngblood (and I'd love to see what all the fuss about Quake II is about).
First off, is now a good time to upgrade from an MSI GeForce GTX 980?
Which one would everyone recommend? I definitely don't want to spend a lot of money, but if it takes a little extra to get a good quality card it's a possibility.
Lastly, my PC currently uses a Maximus VII Hero mobo, an i7-4790 Processor, 16GB of RAM, a Corsair Hydro Series H90, and a EVGA Supernova 850 PSU, all in a Fractal Design Define R5 case. Would any of these components need to be upgraded to facilitate an RTX card?
Thank you!

PS: My monitor is only 1080p, and I'm not planning on upgrading that, just in case that influences which RTX card is the best choice.

honestly i wouldn't bother with rtx unless you want to have ray tracing. furthermore i personally wouldn't buy anything less than an rtx 2080 since for ray tracing it has the lowest acceptable performance even at 1080p. your gtx 980 is still a good card for 1080p.

an rtx card will require no other upgrades to run with your current hardware if you decide to get one. card length and available power connectors will be your only concern

I have no complaints whatsoever on the 980, this ray tracing thing is quite interesting to me though. I see your point on the 2080 though.
Another question: assuming everything is compatible, do you think it might be worth it to snag a 2080 when these "Super RTX" cards get released? I'd imagine there would be a price drop
as a tech enthusiast and graphics snob i personally wouldn't (and didn't) buy into ray tracing just yet. the early adopter tax is a little to unjustified for me. i like the performance of rtx but the whole point of rtx is ray tracing and imo none of the rtx cards can ray trace worth a damn. i have a high refresh 1440p monitor and since even the rtx 2080ti can barely do 60 fps with ray tracing on at 1080p highest quality it's just not worth it. when more games support it and the ray tracing performance is better i will definitely consider rtx

but to answer your question i don't think prices will drop significantly

You should read the reviews on Quake 2 RTX. It's a nice feature to be sure. But the performance impacts are quite shocking for a fully ray traced experience. The practical use for several generations will probably be to used in a very limited way.

The RTX cards may come down in price a bit, well unless the Super cards are just priced higher than their corresponding non-super model. It's a definite maybe.

I think you can probably afford to wait and see a bit longer yet though. Although I'm personally not a big fan of waiting for the next thing, especially a run of the mill refresh cycle.
You should know the price dropping will start soon so you should wait. The RTX 2080 SUPER will come in a month or two and the prices will dropp.
The RTX 2080 cards will cost the same as RTX 2060 do now.
RTX is just a big "whoop" that nobody needs, so a 1080 ti is a very good card. If you can get it....

I've heard nothing about a 2080ti Super.
And, I've also heard, at most, the cards will get a 100$ price drop. So, that's quite far away from '2060 pricing.'
Yeah, don't do it for the day trading alone.

I don't have any games that support it, but using the 3DMark, Port Royal, ray tracing benchmark, it is about a 55% performance hit on my 2080ti.

Benching about 100fps in Time Spy & Port Royal (with the day trading turned off), and about 45fps with the ray tracing enabled.

It's pretty, but unless you're just itching for an upgrade, I'd ride it out and see what the next round looks like.

If your on 1080p and the gtx 980 does all you need, I'd just wait for what comes for gpus in the future, once ray tracing is more wide spread and better gpus come out in future.

If you really need more performance now, then I'd try to snag a 1080 Ti
I agree with Bad Motha, a 1080Ti seems the most viable option right now. They're a hell of a lot more powerful than your 980 and reasonably priced too.

It also gives you the benefit of having a 4k ready card should you decide to make the leap
Alright seems the general consensus is save money, which I'm more than fine with! Thanks for the input guys
