Laptop BIOS updated itself
I'm pretty confused right now. I started up my laptop (ASUS FX505DY) and it immediately went into a bios update (v308 to v309). I didn't tell it to do that, never downloaded the new BIOS, didn't put it on a flash drive and there was no thumb drive in any USB port. I checked online a bit and saw that there was an "Asus live updater" program that can cause this behavior but when I got the laptop I wiped it clean with a fresh Windows 10 install and never installed any live updater. I looked under 'add remove programs' and it isn't there.

I dont think there are any settings in windows that could cause this. The only ASUS software I have installed is the Armory crate and ASUS keyboard hotkeys so I can jump between fan profiles and use the rest of the function keys. I don't see anything about BIOS or auto update in the Armory crate.

What the hell made my laptop update its own BIOS like this? The update went fine but BIOS is something I usually leave alone unless I'm having a specific problem that the update will address.

There's some powerful voodoo going on here. I'm very confused.

Windows might have done it, unsure if Windows has this functionality or not. Might be something new in 1903 if you are running it. Some Linux distributions like Ubuntu also update firmware.

309 was released earlier this month.

Edit:
Windows has this functionality, looks like it might have pulled it in with a driver update.

Nice, good find. I assumed Windows wouldn't be able to do this. Now I just gotta find out how to turn it off.

Turning off the automatic installation of drivers should do the trick.

Right click "this computer" > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings
