Depends on the game / movie, the encoding method will largely determine how effective the surround is - try it with it on and 2-channel L/R only, if the game has a headphone mode that could be a surround decoder in itself (e.g. cs:go has it) and finally try 2-channel on it’s own accord.

A good read: https://satsun.org/audio/

In my experience, all the virtual surround processors distort the audio quality and dont help with better aural positioning. For gaming, a good pair of stereo headphones is the best surround sound.

So the best is stereo headphones for surround sound? Stereo headphones are only L/R channels and that isnt surround sound. Stereo headphones need virtualisation to have surround sound.

OP depends on the game. Some virtualise surround sound for headphones themselves so Sonic should be off for those. Turn it on for Games that don't and decide for yourself whether you like it.

It was a play on words. A high-end pair of stereo headphones works better than any virtual or real surround sound headphones in my experience.
