You can't run video to it alone but it does a good job at gaming. I'd go with mid-high.
so ive heard but is you class it mid/high as a cpu alone then what about the Ryzen 9 3900X as im debating what to upgrade too currently

If gaming and not much more, 3600 or 3700X are plenty powerful
3900x is a HEDT chip on a consumer platform, it is not for gaming.

It's not a HEDT CPU, and 'not for gaming' is just wrong. Anything can be used for anything, with varying degrees of success.
The 3900x is great for 'gaming', you don't NEED it though.

Personally, I'd call it mid-range.
Because of where it's placed in the product stack and how it performs comapred to Intel.

That doesn't mean it's weak though. It's plenty for just gaming, just like the 3600/x.

Not much difference between the 3700x and 3900x. Games won't make use of the 3900x fully.

Same for the 9900K and KS

Don't tell people how to spend their money. My 3900x works perfectly with any game. Except Max Payne.

They didn't?
Dude, two threads on what is considered 'high end', really? The 2700X is mid level now (to me, just below mid-high) after the Ryzen 3 series had been released. Same goes for when Ryzen 4 debuts, all Ryzen 3 CPU's (not sure about the 3900X and 3950X though) will have to be drop a notch in term of ranking.

It doesn't hurt to have more core/threads, and in that sense, the 2700X would prolly be able to hold its own in games for the foreseeable future (8C/16T is the sweet spot in my opinion). So, if OP has the 2700X, just do what you want with it (be it gaming or productivity) and it should be fine (assuming OP has a decent GPU like a GTX1070/RX VEGA56 or higher).

They are giving sound advice as the much more expensive 3900x is not worth it for pure gaming if that's your intention.
If you want.to buy a more expensive cpu that's on you. But don't be surprised when it doesnt do better then your friend pc that has a 3600 or 3700X, now sure though, if u love to stream, heavy multitasking while gaming then a better cpu might be worth your money. Especially if you're using the PC to make money. Above a 3700X though, make sure you research the higher end boards with rock solid VRM that can actually handle such higher end cpu properly. And don't forget about a quality psu and good cooler for cpu and a good case where you can have excellent airflow.
3700x is still high end. It's the high end choice without having people laugh at how you spend your money. It's a solid choice. It will have the same respect a 3900x has up until it's out of date. As soon as 4xxx gets released 3900x will be just as far behind as the 3700x.
