MSI Laptop Overheating Issue.
Hey guys, what’s up. So I just recently purchased a MSI GL63 9SDK-842 laptop for a really good price. I’ve been researching this laptop and checking out benchmarks and saw this laptop can run most games on pretty good settings. This is really my first gaming laptop and my knowledge of computers isn’t that good.

My question is, from what I’ve heard, this laptop has problems with overheating and temperatures going up to 99c on the GPU. So does anyone know what kind of cooling pad I can use to help with the overheating issues or is it a better idea to get liquid metal thermal paste on it to help with it? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Paste won't help because it's an issue with the cooler itself. All you can do is use a cooling pad.

If you have a warranty left for it, it's not worth voiding it for a minor increase in temperatures, and usually it's nothing at all.

You don't void warranty by taking laptop apart and working on it. As that's required to do, like for ram or drive addons. Just like with desktops.

Voiding warranty is when you were the cause of harm, abuse, physical damages. Things of that sort.

You also can't void warranty by wiping the device clean of OS. As you are free to clean install any os you want, use your software, use other drivers, etc.

Nah MSI is cool with you opening up your laptop, well if you're adding liquid metal in your laptop like OP said... Not gonna end well.

You should never need to use liquid metal paste that is for special needs.

And you should never need to replace the past on a new laptop, at least more then a years worth oF use should be able to be had from it before that is ever a need and even then it's a maybe because on most systems, the paste easily lasts 3-5 years or even more.

Now if you would rather install betterm paste, ok sure. But just not liquid metal paste. Just use Grizzly if you want a better paste that will do the job well.

If I don’t use a paste. Which cooling pad would you guys recommend?

You always use a paste on cpu amd gpu cores.

Pads are for things like memory chips. Such as the vram on a gpu.

Oh right. The kind u sit the laptop on ;-)

First off, pads with idk how many fans, they generally do not help one bit.

The reason many laptops run so hot for many folks is because they don't sit it on a proper surface, or elevate the laptop.

Depends on the cooler more than anything. I have a laptop that has one little heat pipe for the CPU and GPU, and a small blower. That's it, and it runs like ♥♥♥♥.

So a cooling pad won’t help? Reason I’m asking is because this laptop I ordered. I’ve read up on and apparently playing any high intensive games causes the laptops to heat up to over 90+ Celsius which is pretty freaking hot. I’m not an avid gamer, but I would like for this laptop to at least last me for a good while and I’m worried that these heating issues will kill the laptop.

Those temps may be high, but it's still pretty normal.

It will but I've found suspending the fan intakes over open space helps more than that. Repasting and undervolting the CPU can help too.

The gaming laptops I've had over the years, hitting around 85-90*C is normal. They usually won't have throttle issues til 95+

Keeping the laptop elevated is key to avoiding actual overheat issues. So yes that is one area where a cooling pad can help. Ones that offer decent built in usb hubs helps too.

i had same issue with my MSI but was some of the stock software causing issues and false readings, was saying well over 90c and saying fan wasn't running etc when it obviously was, uninstall the stock msi tuning and monitoring app and the nahimic sound software seemed to cause issues too. Any of the crap they put on just get rid of.
Got rid of them and problem went away.
Then use MSI afterburner to monitor temps etc, 80 is fine but should never be over 90 even in a laptop. Mine often gets no where near 80c
