Can my USB Type-C able to output Display?
Hi, so i have an ASUS ROG GL553VD laptop. It has 1 HDMI with 1 usb type-c for Display. I've been using external monitor for a year now, connected through the HDMI. Yesterday i bought a Type-C to HDMI Adapter and when i plug it to my Type-C, the monitor doesn't detect any signal (or as if nothing is even plugged).

Are all type-C able to output Display or just Thunderbolt? because i don't know if it's the Type-C to HDMI Adapter that is not working or just my laptop's Type-C can't output display from it.

Not all USB-C ports are able to output video. Display output is one of the optional features of USB-C and it is up to the manufacturer on how they implement the port and with what optional modes. It does not necessarily have to be Thunderbolt for display output.

I glanced at the product page for that Asus laptop as well as the manual and saw no mention of the USB-C port supporting display output. Given that and your experience I would say it is safe to assume that it does not.

Usually the laptop full spec will say if it can be used for that kind of output or not. Unless the laptop has an NVIDIA RTX based gpu, then the chances are slim to none. And thus usb type C is there for charging and high speed data devices.

my friend's laptop the Lenovo Legion Y520 can output Display using her Type C port, in the Lenovo specs page it only says USB Type C 3.1 :/ the same as my ROG laptoo

The specs just list what the ports and hardware is.

Look in the actual full pdf manual and if the type-C can be used to output a display, it should explain that in there as part of all the details about using your system in general.

There are also different generations of USB 3.1 Gen1 and Gen2
