Ryzen5 3400G vs GTX 1660 Phoenix OC 6GB
I am currently deciding whether to grab myself a GPU to add to my Ryzen3 or to upgrade to the AMD Ryzen 5 3400G first.

The issue here is cost/availability.

GPU:
ASUS GeForce GTX 1660 Phoenix OC 6GB
$384 AUD

CPU:
AMD Ryzen 5 3400G Desktop Processors with Wraith Spire Cooler
$243.21 AUD

As a note, what I want to know is whether I should focus on using the Vega 11 graphics or whether I should simply add a GPU in.

What do you guys have to say and think?

Thanks.

the apus gpu will be crap next to a decent dedicated gpu
1660 will run circles around it

dont even bother with the 'g' apus if you can on add a dedicated gpu right away

1660 massively outperforms any integrated graphics.

1660 is a big winner here. Vega 11 is fairly powerful, but simply not in the same league as a 1660.

I was just coming to reply to the other guy.

Yes it does, but at almost double the cost. That is the issue.
I don't really want to spend $384 + tax if it will not fit with my Ryzen3.

One thing I am confused about, I have read the 3400G does not have integrated graphics now, could you help me clear that one up?

edit:
To clarify, the integrated grpahics has been great on this Ryzen3 but now I want more than 2GB VRAM so anything past 3-6GB RAM will do me anyway. Considering costs of gear here I want to be sure I am buying smart so appreciate all the comments.

3400G has Radeon Vega 11 integrated graphics, still nowhere near the 1660 performance.
Any Ryzen CPU would be fine with GTX 1660 so no need to worry about potential bottleneck with your Ryzen 3.

Yes, I know the vega 11 but a random article said otherwise so I wanted to double check. lol

Bottleneck is not the issue, cost of items is.

Even with cost taken into consideration the GTX 1660 is far better bang for your $ then going for new CPU at this point.

The worry is I get the GPU then decide I want the CPU upgrade and have to wait a year :P

I would wait a year with your current CPU and GTX 1660 anytime over trying to play games for a year on integrated graphics.

Thanks, I appreciate that insight.

I have achieved some pretty excellent FPS and graphics options on this Ryzen3, I just want an extra few GB CRAM but the 1660 will give a real good kick and I am very rleuctant to buy any second hand GPU here so following everyones comments I may get that one. I was originally told to get a 1060ti when I built it in January anyway.
Hi, just a follow up question.
I believe I was told to get a 1060ti.

Is this GPU better than the 1060ti? It seems to be newer and better, unless I am mistaken.

There is no such thing as 1060 Ti, they probably meant 1660 Ti.

As performance goes it`s 1060 3 GB, 1060 6GB, 1660, 1660 Ti, RTX 2060, RTX 2060 Super.

Which leaves me wondering what cpu do you actually have now?

Ps, msi armor rx580 8gb is $298aud.

People don't give the Vega 11 enough credit. Sure, you have to lower some settings in pretty much every game, but for an iGPU, it's really impressive and is enough for a short-term until a user saves up enough to buy a much greater dedicated GPU.

Edit: Can almost guarantee it was the 1060 after your specs btw.
So is the 1660 as good as the 1060? Is either better or are they more or less the same? That is all I need know there.

I really do not know, I have long since lost the original pre-receipt with it listed.
It was definitely a 1060-70 or something similar so whether the ti belongs or I have added it I am not sure.
What I still want to know though is, is this 1660 as good as a 1060?
The one thing I do know is I was recommended to go 1060-70 as it is the sweet spot for my Ryzen3 build, especially regarding cost.

It says on the first line of the post haha
Ryzen3 2200G.

Is an RX580 as good as a 6GB GTX 1660 though? This is minimum here, really. It goes from 2GB at $170 to $350-600+ to $1K+.
Availability is also an issue, shipping costs alot where I live in Aus unfortunately so I have to rely on the very few local stores getting it in.

I was not sure how far past the Ryzen3 the Ryzen5 actually pushes but I alreayd have done just that with my Ryzen3 build.
I have pushed this Ryzen3 alot, (seriously, the limits have been really impressive,) but now I have had it a while and want to push up into medium level graphics minimum, I am really over 1920x1080 at low spec.
I have to take into account availability and price, but I want around 4-6GB VRAM really.
It has been really hard finding anything affordable under 6GB VRAM that doesn't make me want to just put in another $50-$100 for an extra 2GB, even second hand costs a fortune so its risky there too.
