You could remove display, but it's best not to damage the cable as you may them to be connected for future things, ensure you have display set to mirror by default for HDMI output.
@OP: google your make and model + replace display, you'll probably find a youtube video that tells you how to open the top part. Disconnect all the connections and see if your laptop still works. If it does, snap away. Or just unscrew it from the hinges since you've got it open anyway.

I wanted to do that on my old Lenovo E530 ThinkPad Edge, but I found out that the Wi-Fi antenna is in the screen part, so I'd lose wireless internet (I could easily just get an adapter for like 10€ but I decided against taking the screen off). I also found out that for some crazy reason, on that laptop in particular, removing the screen breaks the external screen connection, although it seemed like BS, I didn't want to take the chance.
I don't know what make or model of PC you have but check what is in the screen part of the computer before removing the screen.
