Astro C40 Support
I was hoping someone can help me set up my Astro C40 controller. But before I start I wanna make two things clear, 1. I have been asking for help everywhere including Reddit and even steam support and got nothing. 2. I am a near expert at direct input xinput steam input related matters so please for the love of sanity don't say "did you check the PS4 controller option". I have been pulling my hair trying to get the touchpad and gyro to work because right now it only shows up as an Xbox controller even after removing drivers. So please if anyone who has an Astro C40 can help me get mine working I would really really appreciate it. If you don't have one I'm really really sorry but please don't respond because you might not be much help anyway, it seems people who don't have one don't really understand my issue. Anyway please anyone with an Astro C40 help me with this. Lastly I know it must be possible because it is listed on their support controller database here https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5199-TOKV-4426.

Oh ok, well that's good at least. Now if they could get that working for the DualSense controller.
What are you talking about? The DualSense is fully supported by Steam and has full gyro and touch-pad support. And games are starting to support it natively like days gone, mortal kombat 11. Furthermore, games like metro exodus and assassin's creed Valhalla both have adaptive trigger support for the DualSense on PC.

Copy the "Astro_C40" folder directly to your C drive. Then pin the 2 shortcuts to your task bar or start menu (or both, or just run from C drive, up to you). I configured it to run directly from that folder in your C drive.

Didn't get the change to properly thank you again, so, thank you once more. :)

I'd like to add that the registry key may differ from person to person. In my case, it was:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_9886&PID_0025\ff0003e8af]

So, I had to make a simple edit to your .reg file (using Notepad) and replace:

ff0002c4dc

With:

ff0003e8af

Windows 10 Version 20H2
Software is V 1.1.101
Controller Firmware is V 0.78.0
Dongle Firmware is V 0.78.0

Try this, close steam, remove the dongle and make sure the controller is not installed.

I have scripts I made to essentially switch between modes on the fly. You can download them and try running them. They are really simple scripts that you can open in notepad to quickly change the registry.

I also added a bunch of images and such of my configuration of Steam and my Registry. Double check your settings with mine.

does this method work if you play wired?

Yes, it does.

So, the method for changing the registry file still works for getting it to be recognized as a PS4 controller, but something weird happened. First of all, Windows decided to add another registry entry that overrode the one I had been swapping back and forth to get the modes to change. And then after this happened, the shortcut files that fireChuckEr made, no longer changed the LowerFilters registry entry and I now have to go back and change it back manually every time. No matter what I do I can't get the shortcuts to change the entry in Regedit anymore, any idea what might cause that?

*Edit*
Of course the moment I look back and casually try it one more time without changing any steps, it does successfully change to the right entry. That said, I am still curious as to what would cause this issue. Any suggestions are welcome so I can avoid this in the future.

If I were to guess, there was probably some Windows update that messed with the configuration. Example being my Sound Blaster AE-9 has an SBX profile (basically an EQ profile) simply called "Gaming", with pre-configured audio settings. One day the gaming profile just disappeared. The configuration files for SBX profiles are stored in .json files, and the 'Gaming.json' was there, but all the configuration information contained in the file was gone. Basically, the file was blank. The rest of the 30+ files, remained intact though. No idea what happened. I just grabbed the text that belongs in the file from the net, and that fixed it.

Hey, fIreChuckEr! If you're still around, do you know if there's a way of preventing the Astro C40 from reverting to an Xbox controller after Windows restarts?

I'm still using your scripts, but every time I want to play with the controller as a DS4, I have to not only make sure that the controller is off, but also manually unplug the USB dongle before running the script, or else, it won't work.

Since I game from the couch, if I could simply run the scripts and be done with it, it would be a non-issue. But remembering to remove the dongle before doing anything, including starting Steam (or it'll identify the incorrect controller and apply different configurations) is a little cumbersome.

Hope you're doing well, mate, take care!

Doing well, thanks! I can replicate what is occurring, but I do not believe there is much that can be done, because this looks like how the driver behaves. Being that even having a "PS4 Mode" is more of a hidden feature with this controller.

From what I can tell, on boot up it selects the Xbox (PC) configuration by default, and when removing and reinserting the dongle, causes it to flip to the other configuration (PS4) as long as it detects the Logitech driver (yes it is a Logitech driver) is in its alternate mode.

Looking at everything, there is an order of operations that is occurring on boot up and it always follows that order. Reinsertion of the dongle causes it to shift the configuration. I will keep messing around with it, see if I can find something to change how it boots.

Bootup shouldn't really effect it unless it requires the Logitech software and that isn't in the OS Startup perhaps. The controller shouldn't be turned on at all until after you've booted into the OS and load up what you need. The dongle should keep the controller driver alive and present, like a ghost. So that you do not have to even turn the controller on before launching a game. Unlike a wired controller which needs to be connected and ready before launching a game. The wireless dongle does that job and acts as a place-holder for your controller.
