What if i put more RAM on my laptop than it is possible.
So, i have a noteboook Asus X541UJ model -GQ311 (or GO311, i am not sure), intel i5-7200U/BGA, VRAM 2GB. And on board, i have 4GB RAM DDR4 (i think 2133 MHz). It has also one slot, where i can put additional only one RAM. So, the maximum quantity of RAM on my notebook is 16 GB (it says on the box). I want instead of 4GB RAM to have 16 GB RAM, is that possible or i need to buy a 8GB RAM (because doesn't exists 12GB RAM). What if i buy a 16 RAM and put in on the additional slot? It will show 4GB RAM or only 16GB RAM? Because, of course, it will not show 20GB RAM. I need to know if it works and worth it to buy a 16 RAM and put it on the additional slot. Will i have 16 GB RAM or only 4GB RAM?

Memory
up to 16 GB SDRAM(On selected models), 1 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion

16g may be the max base config (soldered on the mobo)

the i3/i7/i7 m will support upto 32g of ram

first pull its dimm to see if it will boot without it and has ram on the mobo
if it only has the 4g dimm and none on the mobo, then get a 16g ddr4 so-dimm for 16g of ram

if it has 4g on the mobo you should be able to add a 16g ddr4 sd-dimm (for 20g total)
or add an 8g ddr4 so-dimm (for 12g total)

Yes, it has 4 GB on mobo. So if i add a 16GB RAM, (+4GB MOBO) it will anyway show 16GB RAM? (The rest of the memory 4GB RAM will be ignored)?

what os 32 or 64bit?
32bit os only supports max 4gb

Bro, 64bit.

Ofc, if i had 32bit, i would reinstall windows to 64bit.

use cpuz memory tab to see what its onboard ram is running at
order a dimm with the same or higher speed and lower cl

Five possibilities, it'll show:
Black screen, not boot (because it can't recognise a 16 GB stick)
4GB (because it can't recognise a 16 GB stick, but decides to ignore it)
12GB (because it can only handle sticks up to 8GB, and ignores half of the 16 GB stick)
16GB (because that's the max the motherboard/CPU can handle, ignoring the last 4GB on the stick)
20GB (Because a firmware update enabled it to handle 16GB sticks and the information is outdated)

No telling which will happen until you put in the stick. Buy it from a place with a good refund policy, or take it to a place where they can test it for you and then reward them by buying the size stick you need from them. There are really too many peculiarities to laptop firmware/hardware to give a solid answer, unless you happen to run into someone with the same make and model who already tried it.

If the max supported is 16gb total ram then usually also means each slot only supports 8gb ram max in each slot. If you have 4gb, ditch it and buy 2x8gb

yeah what bad motha said. you probably need 2x8gb.

I have a laptop that only reads 3.5GB out of 4GB on a 64bit OS -- I couldn't just add a 4 GB to my 2GB and get something extra; I had to stay within its limit and accept the results.

16GB is pretty good as it is so you should be pleased with the results compared to 4GB.

I ended up just putting my old ram in a box; sometimes stuff goes bad and it's good to have a spare... but putting it up your old stuff for sale on some website is always an option too.

anyway--2x8gb is what you need, ditch the 4gb or keep it in a drawer and enjoy the future at 16gb!

Why i should but 2 of 8 gb, if i can put only 1 plank?

16GB then -- i see on the link you provided that it has a single socket for expansion. It doesn't say anywhere on it that it has 4GB built in on board, so it probably comes with 4GB already in that socket, which you'd remove and replace with a 16GB ram module. Unless you know for sure that is not true and that there is, somewhere, 4GB permanently attached and a memory slot that is empty.

If that's true, then you can't add 16GB, because it supports up to 16GB--they do not make 12GB ram chips as far as I've seen, so unless its a special ASUS 12GB RAM chip to go along with a 4GB module built into the system -- you probably have a 4GB in the slot and it has to come out to upgrade to 16GB.

Since the info page says it supports "up to 16GB" on selected models, and none of us here know if your model is amongst the selected types that support it (the page doesnt say if your model does or not), then maybe it'd be a good idea to email them and ask if a 16GB module would be what you need for your model.

I have a few asus motherboards and while they may be sort of slow with the support, they've always helped when I have contacted them for any reason. good luck! Even if say you can only go to 8GB or something not as good as 16GB, it'll be better than 4GB so I think it's still worth asking them about and buying an upgrade if you can do so.

16g onboard is the largest of that model laptop
you can add a 16g dimm to it for 32max that the cpus support

for the 4g model, adding 16g dimm will make it 20g

No, it has 2 dimm slots, remove the current 4gb
