Should I buy a GTX 1050ti laptop for $650 or save for a GTX 1650 laptop for $800
My laptop is an ancient ass I3 1.8ghz cpu, 4gb of ram, and of course intel hd 4000 graphics with a 500gb 5400rpm hard drive. As a graduate I was given some money and realized I have enough for a new laptop. My phone is also an ancient Samsung Galaxy S5 and I really needed an upgrade for both of my devices. I came to the realization that I had a choice. Buy an IPhone 6s (its free right now), + get a gtx 1050ti laptop or save up a couple of months and just get a gtx 1650 laptop. Anyways thanks if anyone can help me out here <3

Kind regards,
New steam user <3

I'd stay off the 1050ti, it was entry level to start with and has been superseded.

Why don't you post what you've been looking at & a budget.

Edit: I've got 3 Asus G-series laptops with 965m, 1050ti & 1070 respectively. There is a huge difference between the 1050ti & 1070.
A 1660 is on par with a 1070. If you could hold out for a 1660 (over the 1650), I'd think you'd be happy for a significantly longer period. But I'm not sure about the drop off between the 1650 & 1660. The 1050ti is starting to show it's limits.

I would also advice skipping 1050ti laptop, if you have gaming in your mind and other better options available in the near future.
If you can wait and game then save. If you absolutely can't wait and don't game then buy the 1050. If you can't wait but do game flip a coin.
I wouldn't go below a 1660 Ti at this point. The two gpus u speak of are much too weak

I wouldn’t go for a 1050 TI just as others have mentioned, it’s really showing it’s age now and isn’t really ideal anymore. Save up for something better, the 1650 is 20% better then 1050 TI but that’s still not really saying much. If you can get something like a 1660 and up go for it but I would personally pass on the 1650
the 1050ti can game just not new games maxed out is all, my brother has the 1050ti acer and it runs any game just fine, but if you want 1080p maxed go for the higher budget laptop, but that 1050 no problem will run re2 remake no problem just not maxed out
Neither are good enough for serious gaming. And 1650 is not that much better than 1050ti. If you main focus is gaming, you should save more and get a laptop with 1660ti or better, or get a desktop. If you need a laptop for other than gaming, get the one with 1050ti and be done with it.
Maybe you can find a good deal on some last gen gaming laptops with gtx 1060, if so, get that.
1650 is not 20% better then GTX 1050 Ti, maybe 10% on a good day so saving few months for that is kinda pointless.
Would say either buy GTX 1050 Ti now (still vast upgrade from what you currently have) or save for GTX 1060, 1660.

HOW TO MAKE A GAMING PC (on a budget)

Step 1: Buy a optiplex 7010

Step 2: Put a GT 1030 in It

Oh wait, You said laptop?

Na desktop all the way.

Both the 1050 Ti and 1650 are a complete joke to gaming, such crap gpus shouldn't even be made. Do your reserach, look at videos that compare at least the low and mid range gpus so u can see what performance u can realistically expect. Gpus under rx 580 or 1060 6GB aren't worth it, period. If gaming is what you wish to do with it.

But also right now, given the pricing of gtx 1060 6gb, 1660 Ti, rtx super 2060. No more reason to look at gtx 1060. Especially since 1660 Ti and Super 2060 are not that expensive and would easily give you performance that previously would need either 1070 or 1070 Ti to get, which were much more expensive compared to current 1660 Ti or 2060

If you are in USA, could go on ebay and get a Dell.OptiPlex cheap, with i7-4770 or 4790, 16gb ddr3 1600, various combinations of drives, such as 250gb ssd and 1tb hdd. Then simply get a rock solid PSU and then basically whatever GPU you want.

kinda depends on which games he wants to play and how much fps are ok for him... personally if i consider a gaming laptop it needs a decent gpu in it and i would not call a gtx 1050 ti or 1650 laptop "gaming laptop" even if almost all games somewhat run on it... another thing do you really need a laptop and game when you are not at home or could you have a cheap business laptop and a decent desktop just for gaming?

Just know that the cheaper you go, not just less performance, but less life overall. As a laptop with say, i5, 8gb ram, gtx 1650... this is not going to hold up very well as time goes by. Now if you actually buy something good with 9th gen i7, 8 or 16gb of ram, at least once decent sized ssd to start with, and at least a 1660 Ti or 2060 gpu. It would be able to run game to date smoothly and not be a choppy stutter fest. And be able to last you many many years of being able to run demanding stuff. So yea, keep that in mind, since you can't upgrade the major parts in a laptop that are responsible for the core performance.
If you buy a 1660 ti laptop you'll be paying top price, if you get a 1050 ti you should be able to find a nice sale and save money. 1650 is a debatable middle ground, better than 1050 ti but not worth buying when the 1660 ti is out there. I have a 1050 ti laptop and have found no reason to upgrade at this time.

btw, Intel HD 4000 was surprisingly capable of running older dx9 games in it's time, I do believe integrated graphics will one day make discreet graphics irrelevant, it'll be a while but it'll happen.

Onboard gpus won't replace dedicated. Cause that would mean replacing your cpu in order to change the gpu. Onboard has its place, just not in gaming. For most other lesser demanding tasks though they do fine, especially the current gen onboard gpus from intel and amd, such as Intel 6xx series or Vega 11 series onboard a 2400G

1050 Ti is just not good enough for most 1080p games, it's the bare minimum

I said one day onboard will replace dedicated because that's what advancing technology does...makes things more viable and convenient...Not long ago there were many on these forums who would argue that you can't game on a laptop or that laptops aren't made for gaming, advancing technology has rendered that a false statement.

Any why would you say 1050 ti can't handle 1080p? It runs thousands of games at 1080p 60 fps. You would literally have to only play the most graphically demanding modern titles to get a 1050 ti to falter. And did you know that games have something called video and graphic settings? Is medium/normal a crime...especially on a laptop screen?

The OP is clearly on a budget and budget does not mean recommend me a laptop where I can run everything maxed out on ultra. The best value for his price range is clearly a 1050 ti
