SSD / Overheating?
So I just got into rust, and downloaded it onto my SSD so the game would load faster and everything would be all around better. Except recently my computer has been completely overheating when it’s on my SSD. Just shutting down fully out of no where and won’t even let me turn it back on. I put rust back on my D drive (hard drive) but takes forever to get in game. Does anyone know how to fix the overheating problem when rust is on SSD? (Fans are all working and PC doesn’t get hot at all when rust is running on my D drive)

what sort of SSD are we talking about? 2.5 inch SATA, M.2 SATA\NVME or PCIE SSD?

also what model SSD?

An SSD won't cause any temperature change to any other parts; and generally SSDs won't overheat.
(Unless we're talking NVMe, some models to thermal throttle.)
And, there is one SSD that has something like 90 LEDs on it, and that will throttle like a ♥♥♥♥♥ if they're on.

SDDs use so little power, and produce so little heat. I doubt that's the problem.

Have you done ANYTHING ELSE since (or just before) you started having these overheating issues?
And, could you tell us the temps of your hardware. (CPU, GPU, and the SSD if possible.)
(You can use HWinfo if you don't have any software that monitors it already.)

ADATA - SU635 960 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Capacity 960GB - 15360 GB

I was playing again last night. Moved rust over to my D drive (hard drive). And my PC black screened again, and the fans were going crazy. So now I'm thinking it isn't the SSD but i could still be wrong, but the PC had been off for a while and wasn't hot at all.

I downloaded HWInfo, and I'm going to be honest with you. I'm not sure what I'm looking at lol.
But everything is green and I don't see any red flags. (I did just turn it on tho)

And no, I haven't done a single thing. I don't want to mess with the PC lol. That's why i just hopped straight onto here

Could you see what the temps are while gaming?
Because at idle it doesn't mean much.

You want to run HWinfo in sensors only mode; you will see a few tabs there. One for CPU, one for GPU, and you should see a S.M.A.R.T tab for your SSD (that should have the temp of the SSD in it.)

I wouldn't suspect your SSD automatically. It might not be an overheating issue, it could be the SSD is defective. But I dunno you haven't posted any temps or specs outside of your SSD so maybe you want to rectify that....

So i just went to run rust. To then get the temperature information for you guys.
My computer just crashed while starting rust. The monitor goes black and the PC stays on but the fans go absolutely insane and get very loud.
And i know its bad to use the button on the actual PC to turn it off but thats the only way i can shut it down after this happens. Any ideas? This PC is 3 months old max. So i don't know what could be failing.

A lot of people are saying on reddit they don't think its my SSD, but I'm relatively new to all of this and don't know how to check whats running how it's supposed to and whats failing.

Well instead of trying Rust, we know that it crashes. Try something else that's intensive. Or some benchmarks and see what the temps are.

It's also possible that the game itself is having some issues. Have you verified the Rust files on the SSD? It might not be an overheating issue at all. Just a really hard crash.

I mean it's not "bad" to use the power button. You just typically don't unless you don't have another option. For example if you have software in the middle of doing stuff or unsaved files, the power button isn't going to check to see if it's OK, or ask if you're sure, and that can have consequences. So normally you'd do it the "right" way to avoid those particular consequences. It's not physically damaging to the PC though.

Unless you buy a Kingston SSDs with so many LEDs on the PCB that it overheats itself while idling:

I was trying to take a screenshot for someone on reddit on my PC (I'm on laptop currently) and i went to make an account on imgur and as soon as i hit create account. My PC black screened again and the fans got insanely loud. Which is what has been happening. I actually moved rust over to my hard drive and it still crashed and did the normal black screen thing.
Do you think i should still run a different game (would probably run fortnite) and see? Or does this info help at all that it could be something else

You should read the rest of my comment before you reply, I said the 2 exceptions to the rule are NVMe SSDs (Specifically the controller) throttling, and if it has a ton of LEDs on it.

You don't need an account for Imgur.

And, if it crashed while using a browser, the problem wouldn't be related to the SSD.
(Because you're not using the SSD as the OS drive are you?)

To be sure though; unplug the SSD for a while and see if the issue still happens. That's what I'd do.

I would verify the Rust game files with Steam, or reinstall it.

But yes trying to run some other demanding games wouldn't be a bad idea because it can help narrow things down. One of the core goals of troubleshooting. If Rust is the only thing crashing, kind makes the game itself the prime suspect to address. If everything crashes, sure could be a hardware problem. But could be a driver or OS problem too.

At the moment it seems like you might have jumped the gun with SSD overheating, and overheating in general. So I would say table that thought and try cutting some variables down of what the issue might be. If your initial guess turns out to be right, fine. If not, you'll save some energy trying to figure out how to cool a SSD...

Okay so, I just tried to start my PC back up, to get a picture of the temperatures for you. I turned it on and right away the fans got loud and the monitor said no signal. So it definitely has to be hardware right?

I'm not thinking its the SSD anymore either, but i honestly don't know how to figure out whats going wrong when i can't even turn the PC on.

Well fans typically kick on straight away, all the speed stepping and fan control stuff loads up after/during boot, not at 0.1 seconds after power gets turned on.

Which drive is the OS drive? The SSD or the HDD?

Were you able to turn on the PC during the first few Rust crashes? I mean sure it could be hardware, it could be the SSD failing, because that does happen however rarely. But from over here we can only guess. And you're struggling to get information and cross things off the list.

Because even if it is hardware, so? You'd still want to figure out what the offending component is. So you're still going to be troubleshooting to narrow things down. And you might have just borked your Windows install though and need to repair/reinstall, which is no biggie.

So first things first, when you turn on the PC, can you at least get into the BIOS?
