ASUS Strix 7.1 Headeset
Just bought this headset and I have to say that I am very disappointed in sound quality. Before this I owned many headsets, but most of the time been using Sound-blaster World of Warcraft headset, and even though it was 2.0 headset it was much much superior to this 7.1 headset (and I am not talking about 7 .1 enhancement, its the real 7.1 with multiple speakers inside of each headphone).

Anyway, DAC presets are lame and useless, especially with Surround option, I was forced to use FPS preset which was so-so but the gun sound was so loud that it almost burst my eardrums, then if I lowered the sound I couldn't hear any freaking enemy approaching.
This headset needs some volume limiter thing for sudden high volume changes.

Footsteps mode was useless, since it compressed the sound so much beyond recognition, all sounds were unnatural, distorted.

All in all surround was bad experience.
If I changed to 2.0, then it was even worse. Why? Casue the headset would literally play the sounds that only came from front and sides. If you threw grenade at the back, you couldn't hear it going of, since the freaking thing assumes your back is not existing because I disabled surround, therefore back speakers. Like wtf.

Other thing is it has HDMI input, meaning that you can only use it with DAC thing that you get with headset. or audio card that has HDMI output.

To cut the long story short, if you want to buy this thing for movies, its alright, its good for that and jsut that. Maybe Mobas too. But for anything else, consider getting some other headset like Hyper X Cloud Revolver or Steelseries Arctic pro. they are in the same price range.
Cheers

As if we didn't have 1000 threads stating that anything "headset" "gaming" or such has pretty slim chances to have good sound quality.

If this one really packs several drivers per ear, then it obviously has limited space for each compared to the 1-driver design.

The common wisdom stands, if you want quality sound, get actual headphones made for that and add a mic. headsets are made for different aim.

It's just a Stereo headset
The 7.1 surround is virtual through software and unless you are listening to games/movies that offer good surround sound, it would sound better left on Stereo mode

Try enabling loudness equalization

And it's not hdmi, it's usb

All of those headset sux that u listed.
Buy a quality stereo headset and a seperate mic. All headset have crappy mic

Yea I agree, all of these headsets are crap but for people wanting to get all in one I think its better to go after one of those. I own Sony 2.0 headphones which I use for my Djing too and they have really nice sound.

USB is at the end of US audio station, but the headphones themself connect via HDMI to the station. So if for any reason USB station dies you are its limited to hdmi.

Yes I already tried with Loudness equalization ,but all it does it bumps low sound up, instead reducing the sounds that are suddenly too loud.

Yes it boosts low sounds, that's the point. Now just lower the max volume a bit and it should be good. Of course unsupressed guns are going to be really loud, it would be awful if they sounds lower and unrealistic.

I would just return the headset system and use a high quality 3.5mm headphones and usb dac+amp

I already own a pair of decent 2.0 headphones, but I dont have a mic. I thought that this might be good investment since some reviewers stated that some of these headsets are even good for audiophiles (and I am far away from being one). Also I didnt encounter any negative review when comparing them so I was like oh well we came to the point when they made these things to perfection..damn i was wrong.

If you have a decent pair of headphones I would just try a stand alone mic, like a lapel clip on mic

Personally I prefer different headphones for different purposes. I've got 5.1 real surround headphones for games which support surround (3 separate speakers per cup). I had my doubts, but honestly there's no going back anymore.

But for music and stereo sound games I'll twitch to stereo headphones or to sound system.

So far haven't found one solution, which would have it all in one.

^ quite true, I switch between a semi-open back set (Samson SR850) and a closed back set (Senn HD202II) on my pc for gaming and movies and have a Philips SHP9500 mated to my Onkyo for late nite music and movies.

The only pain is the lapel mic, ZM-Mic1 that I have to detach and reattach when I switch... considering a monitor-mount mic like the Samson go mic when I get really fed up with it lol

Or look at mic that is more directional focused rather then omni-directional
