Wait, I don't get it. You're supposed to watch temps under heavy load, not while idling. Sure 50-60 idle is kinda too much, but then it shouldn't stay at 4.2GHz while idling as well.
Also, the whole post is about CPU but you said it's running hot in Quake 2 RTX. Quake 2 can't possibly put any load on a modern CPU.

go into bios and reset it to default settings.

using hwinfo64, what kind of temps and voltages are you getting while idle? do you see the voltage and frequency fluctuate?

what about temps and voltage when you run cinebench?

This is a well known issue for ryzen 3000, motherboard vendor are setting the voltage too high on their motherboard, use the newest bios asap, 1.4 volts is pretty dangerous for that cpu, you better set it manually to 1.3 volts. Other than that use ryzen balanced power management setting in windows 10, not anything else.

Known issue with Zen 2, check the AMD board on Reddit for advice. According to AMD's community relations guy there 1.4v at is safe at low load, the voltage will drop once their is load on the cores. The cores may also be misreporting because they are in a sleep state where they can't report voltage or temperature to some tools. Even if the numbers are real, your situation is undesirable but not dangerous. I haven't heard of any roasted Zen 2 CPUs yet... except the one gamer's nexus cooked. Pro tip: manual OC will never beat XFR+PB with Zen 2, the CPU knows best let it handle itself.

Last time I read about this issue, the Steam client was settings the Windows system clock granularity to 1ms from its default of 16ms. Ryzen interprets this as a sign that a power hungry application is running and boosts up to max. Fancy mouse and keyboard apps, case LED apps, some monitoring tools, probably that Asrock tuner app do the same, so turn that all off and use Ryzen Master or CPU-Z to monitor (but not both at the same time).

Go into uefi and turn precision boost and XFR back on, and change cool and quiet from auto to on. It helps some people. If you get good idle temps try starting the Steam client. If it shoots up and stays there, just close Steam when you aren't playing games.

Had the same thing happen with my 2700X, 4.2ish at 1.46v single core boost. Now at 4GHz at 1.25v all core.

It takes a bit of tweaking to solve the issues currently present with Zen2. Still some BIOS updates to be had, especially with the older motherboards.

I'm on X470 (original revision of the AORUS Gaming 7 WIFI) and I have little issues reaching 4.5~4.6 GHz with PBO, but voltages are still a bit high.

You also have to consider that the 3900X has a lot more packed into that small die, they essentially took a Threadripper's power and put it into the same chip size as the other Ryzen CPUs.

ASRock isn't that bad, actually. The X470 Taichi was pretty popular.

asrock x570 phantom gaming 4

that is one of the worst board across the entire x570 boards from all manufacturers.

I wouldn't be surprised if that board give up in several years time.

Simply put, ASRock is only really good if you dump more money on them. They cheap out the most with cheaper boards, but they're generally able to keep up in the mid to higher end

But the Taichi are actually good boards. Pretty much none of their lesser boards are going to handle a 3900x very well. I would have grabbed x570 taichi if going with asrock

The x570 taichi itself is a decent midrange board, however it's a $300 board that doesn't really have better components for the circuitry parts than $200 boards from other brands like Asus x570 tuf or gigabyte x570 elite.

With asrock taichi you're basically paying $100 extra just for extra m.2 slots, different audio chip, post code led, wifi and the likes.

Asrock x570 gaming 4 on the other hand, is a bottom tier board. I don't know how much it's cost but I know that people would be far better of buying Asus tuf or gigabyte elite, especially if they have the money to pair it with a 3900x.

Mmm are you saying my board (and I do not know much about boards tbh, I just chose this because it was not too expensive and it was covering all my needs) are you saying that the quality of manufacturing and components its made of are bad and my pc is either going to fall apart in a few years or it will burn all my other components?


Also, I read the article about issues with ryzen cpu and updated all drivers etc and now in ryzen master i get 40 C on idle and nice voltage but for some reason in BIOS it still shows as 61 constant with constant voltage. I guess BIOS must be wrong then.

Dang, I feel really bad about my motherboard though, I thought it didn't matter much what mobo you have but if it is going to give out in a few years its gonna suck.

I had Asus before p6t se with i7 980 for 9 years and it never gave out and still works. I just didnt think it mattered so much. Damn. And I was trying to save 150 bucks since I thought it made no difference what mobo you get if they can do the same thing and I didnt plan to OC.

Is it dangerous for my other components to run this mobo? Can it fry them all?

Have you lowered your cpu voltage? Do so asap, also your motherboard may be okay as long as you don't continuously use your cpu for high intensity workload (near 100% total cpu usage) in a long period.

What mobo you suggest for Ryzen 3900? ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus?

My cpu voltage is set on auto, I read about it and it seems to be okay and in Ryzen Master it doesnt show as 1.4 anyway. Just rarely for 1 second during a boost.

What makes you think this Mobo is below than average quality? Price? Has it failed before? It does support 3900x cpu in specifications. And I do not OC it so technically it means that it is nothing fancy but it should run it ok right?

I mean people could be buying all sorts of expensive mobos just because they are expected to do this because if they buy expensive GPUs and CPUs then why not to buy an expensive mobo too just to be safe, but does it really mean that a cheaper mobo won't handle this?

I have 64 ram too. Ram is corsair tho
It's pretty complicated to explain, but just watch this video and keep in mind that your board is one level below x570 steel legend and these other boards.

So you see there are chances that your board is as bad as that msi board that was being compared there or worse, I don't know since there isn't any review yet for X570 phantom gaming 4 from reputable source that I know.

What we do know however is that x570 phantom gaming 4 is supposedly cheaper and worse than x570 steel legend, that's for sure so it's kinda guaranteed that your board is worse than steel legend that was being depicted there.

That's why I told you to lower your voltage and don't push the cpu in long time heavy workload too often. You can do that but don't be surprised about the long term reliability of that board if you done that
