Help on gutting my laptop (Acer Predator 300)
I bought an Acer Predator Helios 300 and I love it, but it's got a big overheating problem. Most new games run extremely well until the GPU heats up too much and has to switch to the integrated card, so then my games start dropping frames like ♥♥♥♥♥♥ tech channels drop iPhones, although it only lasts for about 30 secs or so and then back to normal for a short while. Rinse and repeat.

I was wondering if I could/should gut it and throw the parts into a desktop case and then buy a better fan? Also help on which cases would fit the parts would be wonderful. Thanks in advance!

Specs:

CPU: 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-8750H (hexa-core, 9MB cache, up to 4.1GHz)
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 630; Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB GDDR5)
RAM: 16GB DDR4 (2,666MHz)
Screen: 15.6-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080) ComfyView IPS (144Hz refresh rate)
Storage: 256GB PCIe SSD (I also added a 2TB ssd)
Ports: 1 x USB-C 3.1, 2 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0, HDMI 2.0, RJ-45 Ethernet, SD card reader, 3.5mm headphone jack

The motherboard is proprietary and made specially for this laptop, it will not fit in a desktop case.

Buy a laptop cooling pad, clean the laptop's heatsinks and air intakes. You could try to open it up and replace the thermal paste, this might improve thermals in case the paste application was bad or they used crap paste.

If all this fails undervolt and underclock the GPU. And maybe also decrease the highest you allow your CPU to boost.

Much depends on do you still have valid warranty? Just don't do anything in haste, which would compromise it. I. E thermal pasting. Use warranty services for it, if it's possible.

If you're thinking about putting it into a desktop case, why didn't you buy a desktop to begin with?

Will do. Thanks for the help!

I also have the same laptop and the throttling problem sucks. I tried under locking GPU and CPU. And many other things. I can't play games at 1080p because they will throttle. Also I can only play at 120hz as well. I thinks it's just the laptop. I have had laptops from other companies and none of them throttle. It's just Acer. Also, a cooling pad didn't stop the throttling. In fact, it made almost no difference.

Yeah, I'm using a cooling pad too, with very minor differences. I'm also only trying to push to ~60fps at any given moment. So I think if anything can be fixed, I'll need to buy some good thermal paste.
