So yes, it doesn't matter which one you use.

Mine has 2 too (ASRock AMD B350 Pro4) and one of them is slower - 32x vs 4x. Look at your manual or on ASUS website. Put in in the faster one labelled Ultra M2.

Edit: Okay I looked it up and seems both of yours slots are 32x so doesn't matters.

I'd also take the time to update to latest bios since your board is old. Then boot to old drive if not doing a clean OS install, and install the nvme driver and reboot when done. Then you can install and use drive cloning software from the brand of the new drive to clone over the old to new, then when done config the bios to boot from the new drive.

Okay, thanks for the tip m8. Really appreciate it!

You better check your motherboard manual. If I recall correctly, one of the M.2 slots if used, will disable some SATA ports or PCI-E slots. The other M.2 slot that connected directly to the CPU will not affect other ports.

It should never really matter unless you are using more then just a single pcie card and/or all of the sata ports. Most of the X370/X470 boards should have 6x sata ports, still leaving you with plenty should 2x ports get disabled.

But yes always refer to the motherboard manual as each board will handle how all of this works, differently.

Don't confuse Intel with AMD here. Intel uses a different way through the chipset for M.2 right now while AMD has in many cases a dedicated slot specifically for NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4. While this should not be a problem on Intel as you will never fully saturate the bus (with just 1 SSD), on AMD you definitely want to use the slot that does not take lanes from the graphics card.

When i look at the PRIME Z370-P M.2 Manual i see the following:
  • When a device in SATA mode is installed on the M.2_1 socket, SATA_1 port cannot be used.

So i see no indication of any restriction concerning PCIe.

On AMD boards however you want to make sure not to use the slot connected to the PCIe x16 slots. So its probably the M.2 slot further away from the CPU and closer to the Chipset, as weird as that may sound.

Use the bottom. If you use the top, your SSD will slowdown because there is too much heat from the CPU and GPU sandwiching the M.2

? just no
its fine to use any of the m.2 slots on the mobo

the only ssd that runs hot is the kingston rgb ssd

There is no evidence to that. Quite the opposite with all the motherboard that have only one NVMe M.2 Port which normally is the top one.

aye i saw the review that jayztwocents did on it.. the damn thing got so hot the OS would crash out.. obviously no testing was done on it lol

ya, no idea on how that thing made it to market
if it starts the test rig on fire or you need cooling fans for the ssd it has severe problems

Yea that Kingston rgb model is very bad. And the heat is cause they put 70 less in the things, I mean cmon. Who tested and passed that onto market, they should be fired.
