Best future-proof gaming mobo (intel)
Preferably around $250-$350AUD, what brand, model etc would be best bang for my buck

X299 hedt board is cmiiw the only Intel consumer platform that still has a future with the upcoming cascade lake x this year, but it will be utterly demolished by amd's zen 2 based threadripper on the similar release timeline.

Mainstream? Forget it, Intel will release lga 1200 platform early next year to catch up with ryzen 3000.

No such thing as future-proof on Intel side. Current gen Intel motherboards most likely will not support any future CPUs.

So I should wait?

Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO is decent enough in that price range.

Now is actually a good time to build a PC. AMD and Intel will not release any thing major until next year. Next gen GPUs are not coming soon either. SSDs and RAM are cheap at this point.
Forget about motherboard future proof. Intel Motherboards always only support one or two generations of CPU. AMD is better, but they will replace AM4 socket in 2021.

Currently have a pc (RTX 2080ti/i7 8700k etc) my mobo being an ASUS prime z370-A ii, was just wondering if I should get a z390 from said brand in case of needing to upgrade cpu, better features for OC etc

If you want a 9900K, sure. But keep in mind any future releases will not be supported by Z390.

If you must have Intel, wait for 10 nm Intel desktop cpu, possibly late 2020 or even 2021, your current pc is still far more than capable.
