I have a 2012 gaming rig and need advice
Good day all, I have a gaming pc from 2012 and I'm looking at spending up to £200 to get it to an OK 1080p standard for 2019.

The specs:

I5-2500k 3.30ghz
Gtx560ti 1gb
Gigabyte: GA-Z68AP-D3
RAM: corsair XMS3 8gb ( 2 stick of 4gb)
500gb hdd
Windows 10
And the psu is 650w

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the only things you would be able to re-use are the HDD, Windows 10, case and PSU.

Exactly which case and PSU do you have?

Also do you know what type of windows license you have?[www.top-password.com]

EDIT: £200 is a bit shy, best bet is to upgrade GPU and maybe an SSD now, then save up for the new cpu / mobo / mem kit as a future upgrade

Get a Rx 570 or 580, good 1080p performance for a cheap price

If your PSU is up to task, these would be a good upgrade for the budget:

XFX Radeon Rx 590 Fatboy 8 gb Oc+[www.amazon.co.uk] £173

250GB Crucial MX500 2.5" SSD[www.aria.co.uk] £42 inc. VAT

Again, please post your PSU make / model, very important...

My psu is OCZ Technology, zs series 650w

Not the best but far from the worst, I would say it’s “acceptable” since PSU calc puts you at just over 400w load with those upgrades - should be fine.

Personally I would disable any power management / sleep modes on the older PSU just to prevent any cross loading issues.

Overclock the cpu and buy a new gpu, rx570/580 would be a great choice (8GB) then look to get yourself another 8GB of RAM to bri g yourself upto 16GB.

yes the gpu is out of date by far for ultra settings on something like fallout 4, i tell you this, get 12-16gb ram 16 is better, get a 570 like others say or a 580 and you will run fallout 4 maxed out!

I kind of wince at the investment in DDR3 for the old board - I guess it depends on how long you are going to keep the old cpu/board/mem running

Well the 2500k is still capable, if overclocked and the op seems to have a strict budget, one that wont get them half way to a full upgrade where as 8GB of ddr3 is like 40 quid.

200 quid will be difficult. But there's 1080p lightweight games like csgo and heavyweights like ubisoft rpg tiles. Obviously the lightweight target should be cheaper. The 2500k will play those OK as is.

But if you did want a cpu upgrade then ebay for a 2nd or 3rd gen i7 for about 50 quid. There is an i7-2600 there now for 24 but bidding could be fierce. Your mobo is socket lga 1155. Here is a list of cpus that will fit.

The gpu is harder. A gtx 560 ti scores 3529 on
https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GTX+560+Ti&id=18

You want something that scores about 10,000 for AAA rpg's. New isn't going to happen new for 150 quid unless you can find a sale.

https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

I would look for a gtx 980 or gtx 980 ti on ebay. The ti's are better. Old cards but good performers.

Make sure you can get a refund if a purchase doesn't work.

Then if/when you have some more cash add another 8gb ram.

One potential issue is your psu. Ones from 2012 might not support recent gpus as the electronics aren't good enough.

Ssd and clean install of Win10 64bit 1903

RX 580 would do very nicely for not being too expensive to handle 1080p/60 very well

Get yourself a 1660ti much the same as the 1070 ^ there.

980 for $120 not bad
Anything higher then 980, 1060, 580 would be fairly pointless on that cpu anyways

Buy a RTX 2070 super but if you do that then i would suggest to also get a 1440p or 4k monitor for the best graphics.
