1080 Ti, want an RTX card, which one? Or wait?
Title says it all. I'm still thinking of just waiting it out until more games adopt this tech (and it is great tech), but on the other hand, the upcoming titles like DOOM Eternal and games already out like Metro Exodus and Control make me itch for an RTX capable card.

So which card would have comparable raster performance to a 1080 Ti and still be able to run RTX games at 1440p? Based off some benchmark vids and reviews, I'd be looking at a 2070 Super? Or would I have to splurge for a 2080 Super (I'm not even considering regular models because they're not worth it anymore). My rig right now is

ASUS PRIME Z370-A
i7 8700K
ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1080 Ti
G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB 3200MHz RAM
Samsung 970 EVO SSD
Corsair RM750X PSU

Looks like moving to a 2070 super would be a downgrade wouldn't it?. videos I seen show it getting like five to fifteen fps lower than 1080 ti on average. Looks like the 2080 super is similar in numbers but in the other direction. I would consider regular models if I was you. They're practically the same as the supers only $50 less so if you're interested in saving money just for the RTX factor then gives you more options and ability to save $50 at a cost of like 15 fps or so. Either way looks like as far as regular gameplay you're only going to side grade so you're paying $500-800 or whatever just for RTX capability. Anyways, not trying to derail into the regular vs super versions. If you only want a super version that's cool I'd go with a 2080 ti if I were you or not do it at all considering how good your current card is.

Even the 2080Ti can barely keep up a stable 60fps at 1080p with all the ray tracing effects turned on in Control and many argue whether it's worth the severe performance hit or not. You probably won't notice any of the extra stuff till you stand very still for a whole minute or two.

See it for yourself:

Thanks, that's another perspective on things. I think a 2080 Ti is way, way overpriced, even if it is the best videocard currently on the market. The first decent models start at 1200€ where I'm at, that's what I paid for my PC minus the videocard, lol.

Took me six years of saving up to get one, but that was before I had a job, i.e. disposable income :D

2080s would only be a small upgrade, so that leaves the 2080ti as the only upgrade.

As someone with a pair of 1080ti's and a 2080ti, I'd honestly say, wait it out, the upgrade isn't worth the expense, I was going to upgrade my 1080ti's, but decided the gain wasn't worth the cost.

If you do decide it is, go with a founders, I wish I had this generation, would of saved myself £400.

Unless you move to a 2080 Super or 2080 Ti, upgrading gpu is fairly pointless right now. Ray Tracing also at this time really is not reason enough alone to upgrade. However the 2080 Super and 2080 Ti would allow you to do Ray Tracing well enough if wanted but besides that, they are just also faster gaming gpus in general also. What they can also do well considering their pricing is rendering, something you basically needed a Quadro class of gpu for in the past, at least for people who render where time matter alot so they can make money, fulfill a job need, etc.

If what you mostly do is gaming at around 1440p/165hz or perhaps 1080p, then your 1080 Ti is still very much capable of doing that we'll enough in every game out there.

If you feel 2080 Ti is too much money, then you have no reason to upgrade as that's really the next logical step-up in gpu performance power.

Wait til RTX 2nd Gen perhaps.

I think you've convinced me. I'll wait, and if performance on RTX is still this bad one year in, it's not really worth it, truly.

I've gotten so used to gaming at 1440p/165Hz that going back to 50-60 would be painful, even if it's prettier.

Thanks from me and my wallet! :cleanfloppy:

Well with any gpu series, it has almost always been proven that if you buy a higher end gpu that does what you need and is able to hold its own over time, skip at least one gen of gpu before upgrading.
