WD HDD "ticking sound" every 5 seconds
... which kinda reminds me of the problem with Windows 10 and the APM settings.
The thing is: I tried several tools from the internet - nothing worked. Anything else? Because it just gets on my nerves big times ...

Specs (if relevant)

Storage

3726GB Western Digital WDC WD4005FZBX-00K5WB0 (SATA )
232GB Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 250GB (Unknown (SSD))
1863GB Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB (Unknown (SSD))

CPU

Intel Core i9-9900KF @ 3.60GHz

GPU

3071MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (MSI)

Additional Information
- On the front of the computer (case is a beQuiet), the left LED keeps blinking like crazy.
- The noise sounds like a faint "knocking". I think it's caused by APM function which parks HDD heads too often.

What I tried

- Tools from the internet - which did nothing. (e. g APMDisable)

Question

How do I make the intervals longer e. g. 10 minutes? Or remove the APM completely? Several tools I downloaded look fancy but do nothing at all. And if you know the answer, please: ELI5.

Are you sure it's head parking and not a failing drive? If not Victoria then at least check its S.M.A.R.T. Hard drives are not supposed to make noises, like at all, modern ones even more so.

The HDD is 2 days old. Several check-ups showed it's in a "OK" state. Several Hardware Forums report the same problems with the forced APM - that's why.

if the hdd is 2 days old, contact vendor for possible RMA.

my new HDDs do not make ticking sounds but all my dying old HDDs do.

Not sure if its related, but I had the same issue when I had CPUID HWMonitor running (Win 7) It's a temperature monitoring program that reads all the component's temperature (including HDD). When I close that program, HDD goes back to normal. (So if you were doing any Live HDD monitoring, that might be the reason.)

In the worst case scenario, just get a HDD docking station and makes the HDD external. Only manually turn on the HDD if you needed it.

UPDATE:

I did a bit of googling, seems like this is a problem since build 1809. You can disable APM with 3rd party software like CrystalDiskInfo. Moving the drive to external (like docking station) also helps, because USB3.0 is outside that APM boundary (APM is applicable to drives connected to SATA's AHCI interface).

Use OpenHardwareMonitor instead of HWMonitor and in the app, disable monitoring of drives.

In all your power profiles in WINOS such as balanced and high performance, disable the hdd sleep by setting that to 0 and apply
