Screen tearing on TV through HDMI
Hey,

I recently purchased a 60 inch 4K Sony x690e TV, along with a GTX 1070 and a long 50 foot HDMI cable. All of them support 4K at 60hz.

I played Senua on ultra setting = flawless
Wolfenstein 2 = flawless

Then I played Resident Evil 7 = screen tearing
Then Redeemer = screen tearing
Now The Witcher 3 = screen tearing

In all cases the V-sync is on and the NVidia panel shows me that all displays (2 monitors and 1 TV) run at 60hz

Although under "Display - Adjust desktop size and position", both monitors are at 60hz but the TV is set to 30 and can't go higher than that. Now this is for "desktop" settings and not game settings so I am not sure if it has an impact or not.

Any thoughts or solutions?

Thanks

I would try DVI, then maybe PCI, see if there is still tearing. If there is no difference, then it must be something else.

Vsync may or may not fix screen tearing.

try and limit your fps with MSI afterburner or EVGA thing... whatever its called.

Can you limit frames via nvidia control panel? cant remember.

There is not DVI on that card man...only Display or HDMI.

There is no DVI on the TV either, and what the heck is PCI? I think he meant VGA but you can't get UHD resolution out of that ancient input anyway.

Also, it's Displayport, not just display.

Back OT, even without screen tearing, that TV, even though a solid TV, should have higher input lag than a monitor. At 60 inches, it's also huge. Unless you're going to use it as a TV (with a 4k blu-ray player, TV broadcast etc...) I'd suggest returning it for a computer monitor.

Dude, don't take this the wrong way but this doesn't help me solve my problem at all. I bought a big tv, because I want to play on a big tv.

Enable vsync in the game setting.

Then you'll ultimately have to deal with it having high input lag and that 1070 is not strong enough to handle everything above 60 FPS at high settings.

You're not using HDMI 2.0, that's why you have it locked to 30 HZ. Find the port that gives HDMI 2.0 instead of 1.4, or activate 2.0 from the TV's OSD menu.

You need a HDMI 2.0 capable cable as well.

HDMI ports 2 and 3 support HDMI 2.0 and that TV says it can do the following:

Supported Resolutions
1080p @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4
: Yes
1080p @ 120Hz
: No
4k @ 30Hz @ 4:4:4
: Yes
4k @ 60Hz
: Yes
4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4
: Yes
Most common resolutions are supported. 4:4:4 color is only shown properly in the Game and Graphics 'Scene Select' modes, and HDR content is only shown properly in the HDR mode (but not proper 4:4:4). The Auto 'Scene Select' should switch to HDR when it detects HDR metadata. 4k @ 60 Hz @ 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 color is only supported on HDMI inputs 2 and 3, and only when 'HDMI Signal Format' is set to 'Enhanced' for the port in use.
Also, in Graphics mode the 1080p upscaling is very crude, merely mapping one 1080p pixel to four 4k pixels. This makes the image sharper but also more jagged. This behavior is the same as on the Sony X900E, shown here. Graphics mode also completely disables the TV's CE dimming when very dark content is shown on screen.
The TV, unfortunately, has a major bug: when in a low input lag 'Scene Select' (Game, Graphics, HDR), low input lag and proper 4:4:4 support are not preserved when the TV is turned off and back on. The only way to get them back is to switch to a different 'Scene Select' and then back to the low input lag one. It is unknown if a future firmware update will fix this issue.

Regarding screen tearing, that is something you'll have to figure out by dropping the resolution and seeing if the tearing goes away.

You graphics card has a set FPS output, yet using multiple monitors with different refresh rates, this logically means 1 can be out of sync.

Ideally you want all monitors to be the same refresh rate and response time.

Install the monitor drivers, if available.

Right click on the desktop, and select Screen Resolution. Then check each monitor, under Advanced Settings > List All Modes. Find a native one per monitor.

Right click on the desktop again, and select Nvidia Control Panel. On the left side, select Manage 3D settings. Then under the Global Settings tab, scroll down to Vertical Sync, and set that to Adaptive.

Allright so i sort got a solution. Adaptive didn't make a difference but what did was to set the game into borderless window instead of full screen. Now the tearing is completely gone, problem is that since it is now a window it puts the TV in "desktop" mode and that mode has a 30hz cap.

To fix that I activated the "motionflow" thingy that creates a faux 60fps and it looks really good.

The joys and hoops of PC gaming! :tgrin:

Got the "real" solution now. My setup is 2 monitors (#1 and #2) and my TV is #3 but in the display properties I set it so that the desktop, #1, is duplicated on #3.

Now I separated so that the desltop is spread across all three displays and there you go. I can play full screen without any tearing at all.

Thanks Gordon. I sat for hours trying to solve this, by tweaking graphic setting, testing different HDMI cables (even bought a new one).

But to stop mirroring my monitor to the TV solved the problem :champ:
