How Often Are Old PSU’s.....
How often are old PSU’s likely to explode, catch fire or any disasters that can affect me?

So I’ve gotten a old PC like from 2006, and since I’ve heard about PSU’s catching fire, I’ve been scared to use it.

Hopefully they often just won’t boot when they die.

Its like a 50% chance if the PC is more than 5 years old that it explodes, good luck.

Its a stereotype

Could that cause a fire or break my electrical wiring?
Explosions or fires are more brand related, not age. A quality PSU might lose from efficiency over the time, but generally they should not become hazardous.

Is it smothered in dust? Do you already get a burney smell when you turn it on? Is it making noises? Do see any leaking or bulging caps? If not, you're fine.

Recently two PSUs in my house have apparently been fried out in a matter of months, one after the other - and these PCs are maybe ten years old by now - and I'm not talking about them 500W unknown brands.

I have a old: HP RF778AA-ABU s7610.uk
I don't see why you even worry about PSU explosions, unless you are not some die hard customer of DiabloTek/Athenapower/Deer , whos PSUs is basically dynamite wired together.
If they've been working fine for years, it's less likely they'll blow up. It's the "new" ones you have to be worried about since you have no idea about their reliability.

You wanna talk about reliability? Find me any concrete proof that this junk that I own, the Zalman TX700W, is reliable - because I hardly found a damn thing, and I'm yet to return it before it does something to my PC...

Yup been working fine, even after being abandoned for 2+ years!

If it doesn’t cause any problems too me, I don’t really care, it’s just a fun project.
I doubt even old PSUs such as that would be a real issue. If it works fine, good. If not and that PC is needed, replace the PSU.

Pretty much every single Gold Certified PSU I've ever bought over the last 10 years or so (just within this time frame of when we've had this Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum standard) More than 90% of them have lasted well beyond their warranty coverage (which for most Gold Certified I have had, were at least 5-7 years warranty) and then some... Usually they just up and fail at some point if really stressed or worn out to a point of end-of-life type of situation. I've rarely ever had a decent one catch fire or damage components, usually it just refuses to boot the system properly or output proper voltages that are stable to maintain overall system stability as a whole.

So if it dies, it just simply won’t boot? Not anything serious will occur?
One can never be certain of these things; but yes in all my many years of experience, if you using a decent PSU, when it's actually ready to die, it usually just stops working properly. It should up and explode, smoke, fire; when that time comes.

It's also one solid good reason to never buy sub-standard ones, just to try and save a few bucks, it can easily come back to bite you by doing so. Like many of the lower-end PSUs out there that are barely good enough to meet true 80+ Bronze standard, especially when they contain Chinese capacitors. Quality PSUs have internals that are produced in either Taiwan or Japan. Japan caps are world-renowned for being of the better overall quality and usually exceed the standard.
