I5 8600k Temps with Prime95
What sort of temps are considered fine when running blend test for around 30 mins within Prime95 on a i5 8600k @ 5ghz?
And what is the max temp before i should stop the test? Is 82c a good stopping point?

Below 90c.

Also Prime95 is a worst case scenario. Your CPU will never run under such a load during normal use. If you are running at 82c during Prime95 the CPU will probably be running in the 50-60c range during gaming at most.

I was meaning to ask about that, thanks for clarifying it!
Is 30 mins enough to test with blend? My buddy is telling me 15-20 mins is more than enough since gaming all day won't even push my cpu that hard.
Do you suggest running another type of stress test instead of blend?

Don't bother running any kind of stress test unless you are using it for stabilaty testing an overclock.


On air cooling the CPU will reach it's max temp after about 10-15 minutes during Prime95 and will then stay stable at a certain temp. With liquid cooling it will take up to 45 minutes for the CPU and liquid to reach a stable temp but it really depends on the cooler.

Stress tests are going to give high temps without adequate cooling.

If you have a very good cooler and just want to test max temps thats one thing, but keep in mind that in gaming you wont reach those temps no matter what.

Are there any tests which are more accurate towards gaming or should i just run something like Firestrike and monitor my temps?

Yeah Firestrike and such similar benchmarks would do the trick fine.

3DMark is not a CPU stability test. If you don't stability test your CPU overclock, you're prone to random system crashes even when doing lighter workloads. If you want something less intense than Prime95, use Asus Realbench with a loop of the H.264 video encoding. Personally, I don't like temps going above 85C during a heavy stress test though it is technically safe into the 90s. What is your cooling?

I've ran Prime95 for a while now and all loads at 100% & not exceeding 82c but what bothers me is my voltage is set to 1.45. On my other system with the same 8600k i hit 5ghz at 1.34v (guess it's luck of the draw i suppose)
Testing now at 4.9ghz as the voltage is way way lower (1.38).
What exactly should i be looking for when running Prime95? Just temps, making sure loads don't fail?
I'm trying not to surpass 82c max within prime95.

and seeing how high it goes without causing issues

Its not just the cooler though, its the case and airflow along with ambient room temp.

Go in a decently graphic game and see what ur max temp is then, and compare.

Yes, the voltage required for frequencies will vary by chip. If you want to maximize your OC, pair the 1.34v/5ghz 8600k with your best cooling/PSU/MB and try for 5.1. Besides temps and a successful pass of the stability tests, people have their own standards on how long to run the test that varies between 1 hour and 24+ hours. For me, 8-12 hours (run the test overnight while you sleep) is what I usually do. After that, I do like CJ says and actually run some games with the OC.

Also you have to keep in mind that demanding burn-in / stability tests such as some of those Prime95 tests will push the CPU basically harder than anything else, like a Game would. So seeing near max operating temps after approx 20-30 mins in not all that uncommon. As long as it's not exceeding the max, you're fine. Overall I think it would be unrealistic to think most Games would ever push the CPU hard enough to have it hitting the sort of CPU/GPU Temps you'd see when using such tests.

So, what would a max safe voltage be for overclocking an i5 8600k?
Should i not go beyond say 1.40 - 1.45?

Never go above approx 1.4 V

Should easily be able to maintain under 1.35 V while at around 4.5 - 4.8 Ghz

I sure hope you have a decent 240 or 280 mm liquid cooling setup too.
