You can connect it and you'll get a picture, you just won't be able to run it at 144Hz.

Yea, HDMI is 60Hz max
For 144Hz you need to use the DVI-D or DisplayPort.
Look on the website > manual for the exact Brand + Model that you have.

If it's a decent Monitor, then it should offer DisplayPort on it.
And any PC since around 2011-2013 and newer should have DisplayPort on it.

If your laptop has a thunderbold or a type-C connector, you can probably try for an external gpu dock, and then connect that to the 144hz monitor. Otherwise you're not getting close to reaching that.

What is the full laptop model?

And as far as what I meant about systems coming with it, hmm yea I meant like Laptops with a dedicated GPU. Not any cheap laptops with just the basic onboard GPU, since that makes sense that they wouldn't have wasted putting DP on such cheaper Laptops, since HDMI is enough for those. Gaming Laptops (Intel CPU + NVIDIA dedicated GPU) do tend to have that though.

If you do not have a dedicated GPU, why are you wasting time/money bothering to connect a high-end Monitor to it? Any cheap 60Hz panel (Monitor or HDTV) will suffice. You're not going to get onboard GPUs to properly utilize higher refresh rates.

All that has for output is HDMI, so you're stuck @ 60Hz max anyways.

That laptop has a GTX 950M and the specs don't indicate if that HDMI port is HDMI1.3 or higher and I don't know if a GTX 950M has the support for that port or not.

To output 1080p at 120Hz or 144Hz, you need a dual link DVI-D or DisplayPort cable and connect those to your monitor and computer. These standards include support for higher resolutions and refresh rates. HDMI 1.3 or higher can also be used to output 1080p content at 144Hz.

Not really. Displayport was less common in those days, even many gaming laptops only came with HDMI. Heck, the Dell 7559 I had in 2016 was a relatively high end machine with things like an UHD IPS screen, and all it had was HDMI.

On desktop PCs though, yeah, it was more common. In the higher end gaming machines though. Nowadays, Displayport is most found on mid-range GTX and above GPUs. On notebooks however, it was mostly the workstations that came with it. Both my Precision M6600 and the M6700 I'll order tomorrow for dad have Displayport, because they were professional work machines with FireGL and Quadro cards, aimed at making proper use of external monitors (like with docks for multiple monitor setups to increase a poweruser's workspace).

Nowadays though, I suppose you can find Displayport on many off the shelf MSI gaming laptops.
