what is the difference between an intel processor and a intel k proccessor, eg i5 6600k. are k proccessors better?

"K"-CPUs are unlocked, meaning they can be overclocked to a higher GHz, compared to locked; non-overclockable CPUs that are limited.

Another difference that may be noted is that some (or maybe all of the new generation) K series processors do not come with a stock cooler, so you'll have to purchase that separately. While many K and non-K CPUs share the same base and turbo clocks, the unlocked multiplier on the K series can help to squeeze a bit more performance out of your processor.

While some differences between the generations can be noted, there's no blanket comparison, really. The choice would basically be influenced by your intention to overclock or not.

K variant CPU are clocked higher (as aking is trying to say but missed an apostrophe to make it so and not the opposite I think) and are blocked so you can overclock them, mind you they also need an aftermarket cooler to do so, but often have ALOT of headroom for overclocking, using my i9 7900X as an extreme example, stock all core speed is only 3.3GHz on all 10 cores, it will boost upto 2 cores to 4GHz I think it is at stock, however, delidded to help with temps, and under a custom loop cooling, I can overclock all 10 cores to 5GHz.

While not as extreme on mainstream chips due to lower core count, so they have a higher base clock, the same is pretty true for the potential for nearly all modern K chips.

HQ. They're better bang-for-buck than K series. Ks are more for your high-end high-budget enthusiast build.
