Good enough for VR?
Current set up is:
AMD FX 8320 ( 4.2ghz )
Palit GTX 1060 3gb
12GB 16mhz RAM

just wondering if someone can give me a definite yes or no will this run VR ? oculus test is saying no but steam VR test is saying yes and i have people telling me it will run SOME VR games completely fine where as more demanding titles are a complete no go ?

No not even close, VR eats up lots VRAM and you only have 3GB's of the stuff.

So why would they advertise the card as VR ready ? surely that is false advertising and leaves them open for a lawsuit ??

Well if you wanted to do VR you should have got the 6GB version of the 1060 which is the bare minimum for VR.

It is vr ready and you can play few vr games.
But not games like fallout vr or other vr title that requires a gpu with 4gb+.

If u rly wanna go into vr, go with 1060 6gd5, 1070 or so.

would you reccomend to use it just as an entry level VR card? i do intend to upgrade down the line but just want to test the waters of VR before sinking more money into it. Also the prices of GPU's where i live ( ireland ) is insane , a GTX 1070 costs near 500 euro

"VR Ready" isn't a standard or guarantee to play VR. That is simply a marketing strategy for VRWorks, a tool box full of VR specific features for Pascal. You can use the headset, sure... But nothing ties game development teams to make any commitment to make games playable for such hardware.

Your CPU and GPU will be your biggest limiting factors. To have a smooth experience, you have to be able to push 2160x1200 (1080x1200 per eye) at a solid 90 frames per second. Your setup just doesn't make this viable, as you'll have to lower a lot of settings, and that still may not be enough on many titles.

damn , was really hoping i was ready to test it out , so the 6GB version of the card or 1070 is my only hope really ?

If you really want to do VR, then I'd recommend a new computer.

The cpu just doesn't really cut it, either. You'll see this as soon as you do any VR game that has complexity to it.

I wouldn't go for the 1060 6GB either, but it would fair better than the 3GB model. You have to push 2160x1200 (1080x1200 per eye) at a solid 90 frames per second. You need a GPU beefy enough for this task. I'd recommend the 1070.

cheapest 1070 i can find currently is over 450 euros :steamsad: do you have any good european websites that i can maybe source parts from cheaper than Scan UK ? if needs be id rather pay for an entire new PC than over 450 for a GPU alone

I'm not familiar with the European market, but I'm sure someone else that is will comment to help.

Don’t know how many people here giving advice actually own a vr headset let alone testing one with a gtx 1060. I’ve used mine with a gtx 770 and it worked ok until my new card arrived at the time. It didn’t give me motion sickness while playing robo recall. Most Video ram spent on a game was 4 GB from experience but to be fair didn’t test really demanding games. Will install Lone Echo curious about that one. Get the vr, your card will be ok and you’ll enjoy it.
