[SOLVED] W10 Extremely slow spinning dots on startup (help)
Hi there,

My computer's been booting up incredibly slowly for some reason since yesterday.

it stays for a while on the bios, then black screen, then black screen with spinning dots and then finally it gets into windows.

This takes about 10-15 mins, when it usually took 15 seconds.

It's very annoying. Once it has started up everything seems to work just fine, but every startup is a pain.

My specs are:

SSD Kingston Disk 1TB. (OS) and another HDD at 7200RPM for data.
GPU: AMD R9 390X Gaming
CPU: Intel i7-5930K
W10-64b
16 GB RAM

I honestly don't know whta caused this, it just came out of the blue from one day to the other.

What I tried:

-Virus Scan on startup (Avast free antivirus)
-Disabling windows fast boot
-Running a chkdsk /f on C:
-Updated drivers

Im gonna try to update my Intel Rapid Storage driver in case that is causing it (I dont even think there is an updated version yet... but whatever)

Also im gonna do a performance test on my SSD booting.

If anyone has the slightest idea of what can be causing this, please help me!

Thanks for your time!

I would reinstall Windows to see if that helps.

Well yeah that is my last resort since i have lots of software that I would need to reinstall and set up again and that is a pain in the ***

Again as a last resort I would do it but I'd rather see if I can fix it another way first, otherwise ill spend some days updating drivers and installing codecs, setting up software, etc.

I don't think you are going to fix it, just reinstall WIndows from scratch.

Check the SSD health, do a full SSD optimize.
DO NOT rely on Microsoft useless Disk Defrag app to handle your drives, period.
In fact, turn that off.

Use something good like Piriform Defraggler. That can do HDD quick defrag, full defrag, SSD only optimizations, as well as check disk for errors, and boot-time defrags.

i think the only thing that can slow your system is a failing hdd drive.
remove hard disk drive power cable and boot with SSD only...

Alright, I will try that later and see what happens, I will post updates here

Thanks for the help

I hope is not my SSD failing, its pretty new, and it still has guarantee, but it would be a pain in the *** to get it replaced

What about a virus/malware ? Or a start-up program , a scheduled task ?

Nevermind, i finally managed to fix it, though im not quite sure how, since I did several things at the same time (for the sake of time, since every reboot took me a lot of time)

However, most things that I tried, and one of the ones that worked are listed in this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3fdqci/windows_10_takes_forever_to_bootlog_on/

or in this one:

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/software/operating-systems/1403760/how-to-fix-the-windows-10-slow-boot-bug

The most probable solution for me was either switching off the GPU power saving feature in regedit, or just unplugging my Graphic Tablet from the PC before starting up (Windows may have for some reason wanted to startup from the tablet instead of the actual computer and therefore the time delay)

If i had to guess I would say Its the GPU thing, since I restarted again with the tablet just to test and it worked fine, or maybe windows just repaired itself like it brokes himself from time to time.

Go figure, the good thing is that it works again like a charm

In fact I think it's even faster than before, lol.

Now I dont even get to see the dots at all, when usually I would see them for a couple of seconds.

So yeah! Thanks for your help, hope this helps someone with this same problem in the future, Im glad I didnt go through the trouble of reinstalling everything.

Cheers and happy christmas!

The tablet is only going to charge, your BIOS can't boot or otherwise really see that, except that it is a USB device. Its not the Tablet, I can assure you.

Well it has an USB connection that is why it MAY be recognized as a bootable device.

Still, as long as it works, I don't care what was broken lol

Not caring what was broken is why folks don't learn.
Just my 2-cents. That's why we don't recommend making a ton of various changes at once.
Would you go doing needless work to your car when it doesn't start, or has issues? No you think it through and properly troubleshoot the issue at hand.

Best bet to is, don't leave extra devices connected when not actually needed.
Like phones, tablets, extra controllers, etc.
