CPU Overclock - Failing stress test but games work fine
Hi,

Ive overclocked my cpu to 4,5ghz (1,220 volt) and it's running:
Idle: 32-38c
Gaming: 45-55c
CPU-z stress test: 60-66c

These temps are fine when it comes to what i actually use my computer for but there is no way it passes a intel burn test or prime95 test. I've tried changing the volts a bit but it won't make it pass. I find 1,220 most stable.

When i play games my cpuload is around 25% as max but when I do the stress test its at 100% at all times so are those testscores really necessary?
I always use razer cortex which turns off unnecessary processes while i play games so I will never get above 25-35%.

I understand how some oldschool overclockers never would use a system if it has not passed 12 hours of prime95 but how about us normal gamers who never push the cpu's above 30% load?

What would you do in my situation?

Its not stable then the answer is clear.

Games will vary on load, will use your CPU alot.

If its not stable then you are just running the high risk of crashing.

Prime95 not stable for any test for at least a few hours, then something is wrong.

But usually I just do IntelBurnTest for about 1 hour. That whole 24-48 test, that is more of a break-in for a new system. Like when I do a brand new build, yes we run tests that long. But that doesn't mean every test you do later on needs to be that long. That just helps me ensure it should be stable after the customer takes it home. As such a burn-in test, if there is a faulty part right away like CPU, RAM, Motherboard; or ineffective cooling, that should be revealed in those longer stress tests. This why if something is faulty, I can have it replaced right away, not having the customer turn around to come to me with issues in such a short period of time.
