2) Download the DDU utility (google "nvidia ddu").
3) Run to unpack it (it's a self-extracting archive).
4) Boot into safe mode.
5) Run unpacked DDU and choose "Delete video drivers and shutdown".
6) Computer will shut down itself.
7) Remove old graphics card.
8) Insert new graphics card.
9) Turn on PC.
10) Download latest driver from www.nvidia.com or www.geforce.com
11) Install this driver.
I did this procedure today (replaced old GTX 670 2Gb with new GTX 1060 3Gb), and this method worked.
I had some bugs with GeForce Experience (no games could be optimised), so I deleted the one that came with the driver, then downloaded latest version from www.geforce.com and installed it again.

$50 and a good basic PSU that'll work.
And also, DDU automatically opens when you boot to safe mode via the program.
Or you didnt fully insert the GPU into the slot.
and you shouldnt have to have your old GPU installed to uninstall the drivers.
And HOPEFULLY you replaced the GPU with the PC OFF.
Then you boot into safe mode from DDU
and be sure to do CUSTOM INSTALL and only select the NVIDIA driver and PhysX, you dont need anything else to be installed, not even GFE.
When you go to clean the drivers with DDU, it'll bring up a dialog mentioning turning off Windows driver install, accept it.
And yes, after you uninstall them, you clean the drivers with DDU in safe mode, via the drop down list in DDU.
then custom install the driver AFTER you reboot from using DDU as i explained above.
