Depends. If you accept the fact that you will never play any AAA's with GFX on, etc etc, you can game on a $600 craptop. But yeh OP, if you want a GAMING laptop, make sure you have 2K just laying around....

Waste of money. Not worth it. A gaming laptop is just a laptop that when you play games needs to be plugged in just like a desktop. And you need an expensive one to play any recent AAA title. If you get 2 years out of one you're doing well.

Definitely a "niche" product. People game on desktops, at home. Even people who "LAN Party", bring their whole desktop box with them to the neighbor/friends house. Pro level laptops are for those who regularly compete in professional matches, frequently to the point that a laptop is required. One would think "oh, a portable gaming solution for the sake of being portable", but it's really not. It's either a required tool for someone who needs it, or a novelty/luxury item for rich folks to buy because, well, rich folks.... Kind of like rich kids buying server GPUs and using them for gaming GPUs even though they suck, just because, well, rich folks...

A gaming laptop is only a waste of money if you are choosing between a desktop and a laptop. I travel a lot for work and use my gaming laptop while in hotels on travel.

So if you need the portablility for work or other, then look at a laptop. I recommend ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ACER, SAGER. Lenovo makes some decent gaming laptops but if you can spend the little extra more, go with any of the other brands.

If you just want small form factor you can build some powerful micro ATX PC's for far cheaper.

This web site has a wide variety of laptops and they have pretty good prices. Look through their offerings and see how they may fit into your budget, whatever that may be.

So can a "beginner laptop" handle playing Telltale's The Walking Dead series?

Yes, it should... it's not a graphically intensive game at all whatsoever
I would definitely recommend getting one with a dedicated GPU though even if it's weak

These seem like they would be decent. I would probably get the Asus over the MSI because DVD drives are dead nowadays
