best gfx card for PSU with one six pin?
i'm attempting to upgrade an old desktop i've been handed by someone who has no more use for it, and the way it's been put together, i'd have to basically rip the whole thing to pieces to get the PSU out. I'd much rather just grab a decent gfx card which works on one PCI-E 6 pin, but beyond the GTX 960 which has been suggested to me, i'm not sure what else out there might do a better job.

system specs:

i5-3570 Quad Core 3.40 GHz
Asus P8H77-M LE Intel H77 chipset
CoolerMaster Elite 500w gaming supply

suggestions appreciated.

The PSU is already terrible, and the safety hazard is made all the more worse by the haphazard PC construction. I would try to get it out and replace it with a new PSU instead of continuing to use it. Any decent recommendation I might give, the PSU probably can't handle anyway.

Yeah, ditch that PSU and put a good one in, then get whatever GPU you want since that's still a good CPU.
ouch, cheers. guess i need to ditch it. not 100% sure how to get it out to be honest - the machine is a few years old from the looks of it, and the one huge clump of wires that come out of the PSU and vanish behind the metal frame just appear at the top in a couple of different bunches to wherever they need to be plugged into. meanwhile the PSU itself is under a solid piece of metal welded onto the frame - i assume it'll pop out of the back once i unscrew the plate, but working out where all the new wires will go - and threading them behind the backplate - isn't something i do that often.
You should be able to remove the panel behind the mobo and get at the wires. A typical case should let you remove the panels on both sides.

yeah, guessing so. the only thing i'm wondering is - the metal "case" it slides into has one medium sized hole in it where all the wires come out. if i stick a new PSU in there, will i actually be able to get the various PCI wires plugged into the PSU and be able to get them all through the hole? it's possible some might not align with it correctly, and depending on size of the PSU i'm not even sure if it'll fit into the box. it's quite an odd design.

are PSUs all generally the same size? or do they vary quite a bit?
They can vary in size - your typical gaming case usually doesnt restrict the size of the PSU or the wires coming out. You might need to transplant the mobo into a new case if you can't remove whatever box is preventing the PSU from going in.

Luckily, cases can be dirt cheap if you don't care much about the quality. There are some for only 20 bucks or so that will work...

i'll see if i can get the metal box thing off somehow, but otherwise it seems a new case will be the way to go - i can definitely get the mobo out, it's just the screwball PSU setup that's holding things back.

thanks for the help!
of get a faster card that requires no power connector ??.. i think some of the GTX 1050 Ti cards require no external power

they are a lil bit faster from what i saw by just lookimg on google

GTX 960 vs GTX 1050 ti ..plus cheaper

1050's dont require a connector
1050 Ti's might, depending on the design.
