New 144 Hz Monitor but no 144 Hz option only 60 Hz

Hey guys i'm in a dilema...i've been playing on 60 hz for all my life since i first starting playing CS, and i've been doing a lot of reading and they say 144 Hz makes a big difference so for black friday i bought a Acer GN246HL 144 Hz and I installed it correctly with a DVI-Dual Link Cable and I'm still not getting a 60 Hz refresh rate option in windows. I even went to my AMD settings and make a custom resolution and when i type 144 hz and hit apply it says "the custom resolution settings are not compatible with this display. Reconfigure your settings and try again."

I don't know what's wrong, i've tried googling the problem and no dice, i'm stumped
If anybody can point my in the right direction i'd really appreciate it.

I bought a 165Hz Asus PG279Q two weeks ago and it was resolutely 60 FPS until I opened the TV's own menu(via the menu button on the side of the TV) and selected 120 Hz refresh rate.

No because from what i understand you can only achieve 144hz on a Dual Link DVI cable.

I just tried playing around in the settings and there's no option to change the resolution, it only displays the resolution but you cannot edit anything.

It's not resolution you're looking for, it's Refresh Rate.

And try a Displayport cable, they can handle 120+ Hz quite comfortably. My Asus uses one, and it's working just fine.

Yea sorry, that's what i meant to say...refresh rate. when i used the monitor settings it was showing my display on VGA Input and VideoOutput to be 1920 x 1080 H: 68Khz V: 60 Hz

Now i did what you recommended and used a Displayport cable and when i went back to the monitor settings it's now showing

Video Output
1920 x 1080
H: 132Khz V: 120 Hz


VGA Input
1920 x 1080
H: 68 Khz V: 60 Hz

but i still have no other options in windows resolution...even if i go to >Advanced Settings>List All modes, not even a 120 hz option....this sucks i'm still stuck at 60 hz.

You have R7 250 GPU; which is Single-Link DVI
So please use HDMI male to male for this GPU & Monitor

To be honest, if you want the most from 144Hz, get a better GPU.

Oh wow...well that settles it. Out of all the graphics cards it had to be a damn R7 250 that doesn't support Dual-Link. What sucks is that i just got this PC and it was custom made...now i'm going to have to buy a better graphics card not sure what to get since i'm not trying to shell out more than 200 bucks for one. I'm just gonna have to use this for now til i find a good deal...but doesn't HDMI only support up to 50 hz? Might as well just use the DVI/DP right?

It's not considered a good or even mid-range Gaming GPU; so that's basically why.
Your GPU has HDMI 1.4 so it should support the 120 / 144 Hz options @ 1920x1080
The limitations with HDMI is generally it not supporting high refresh rates above 1080p is really all; which is a reason folks tend to stay away from it for PC; but for your combo here, should be fine.

I would get a GVTX1060 6GB model, prefferably from Asus or MSI. They're around $200-250 USD. That'll handle 120Hz very comfortably and should last you a few years before needing another upgrade.

Or maybe pickup an R9 380 / 380X if your PSU is enough.
Cause you can generally find those fairly cheap and are very good performance as well.

I have a AMD FX-8320E 8 core...would you recommend that graphics card still, the one u suggested? I'm trying to get a decent graphics card nothing too crazy since i really only play CSGO (which the r7 seems ok with it), and achieve 144 hz.

Try a GTX1050Ti then. It's at the bottom-end of what will work, but it's better than what you have now. Good ones are around $130-160.

I can do 160 if its a good graphics card....i found the GTX1050Ti on ebay for 160 actually. How can i tell if a graphics card supports DVI-D (Dual Link)? Is it only by physically looking at the connector? When i looked at the description it only shows "1x DVI-D, 1x HDMI 2.0, 1x DisplayPort"

I would buy a new one from Amazon rather than any of them on Ebay. Otherwise you might get scammed - you could easily dress up a GTX1050 as a 1050Ti. There's a big price gap between the two models.

It's a decent card, good for the momey and powerful when running older games. But it's not going to handle modern AAA stuff very well, or high settings.
