I would go with the i5 becaue there is not a huge difference in performance.

I had a hard time finding finding a video with a E3 vs a 4460 but this is how it stacks up with a 4690k which is faster than the 4460.

And this is how the 4460 stacks up with the 4690k

So the E3 might be 8-10% faster than the 4460 but cost about 29% more. I am really just making approximations.

The xeon E3-1231 v3 is a i7 4770 without the igpu.

With that said I would go for the xeon E3-1231 v3 hands down at this point if you have the cash due to some newer games scaling across more than 4cores and actually using hyperthreading. WD2 being the most recent example.

I have been happy with my 4690k, but this year there has been quite a few games that have had all 4 cores pegged in areas. Personally I'm waiting for Zen to upgrade.

I think waitng for Zen would be a smart move too. I think their processors come out some time next month or February. But I know AMD is having a "Horizon Event" on the 13th of this month that hopefully will give us more info.

I am running on a FX6300 currenting and I have been real tempted to just upgrae to a 6600k and call it a day. But if the performance and price rumors are true It will be worth the wait.

Thats what I upgraded from was a 6300 to the 4690k because the 6300 was really holding back crossfire 290x's. Now this year i'm seeing the 4690k starting to hold them back in some games.

With the sales on the 6850k it's been tough not to jump on it, but the SR7 looks like it might come in very strong and if so I think things could get cheaper.

I still have the 6300 in my shop with a 290 and for a supercheap build by todays prices it still does very well, especially with dx12/vulkan titles.

For gaming neither, go with an i5-6400 or i5-6500 if you have a low budget.

For the long haul he should stay with the 1231v3.

Some games 4c/8t it's slight advantage over that gen i5 and some it's actually huge.

What the future holds for i7 is anyones guess but why not hedge your bets, a little extra $$ ($70) now could save a lot extra $$$ later.

More 3:10 ^ on the subject vs i5 6500 ^ 1231 comes out on top.

Like I said the hyperthreading is beneficial in some newer titles and will likely continue to be. Just an example

http://gamegpu.com/images/stories/Test_GPU/Action/WATCH_DOGS_2/wd2_intel.png

If you have the extra cash don't skimp on the cpu.
