A home-built game hosting server,Is it worth it?
I am considering to build a "server" box to host games, not store data.
I am looking to host at most 5 people including me.
I do not have a list and I am wonderin if it is worth it for my purpose or should my build [ https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Agent_Blackwing/saved/Ktht6h ]still run games while hosting the server?

The problem is: it depends on the game; often times you may need a 2nd copy of the game to even do that. And also hosting a server and then having your gaming PC also playing; all on the same ISP connection might be a big problem.

I would read all that as "no"
The question overall is just too broad; depends alot on which games; and what your ISP plan is.

Some would also suggest, get 2x ISPs

I am talking about games that you can download a "console" like minecraft or the steam CMD.
I have charter spectrm with a relitively high speed and Ping if local.
Yea for one like that you should be fine running both a Server and Gaming PC Client together on the same line.

What do you generally get when trying SpeedTest.net

I have high download speed and upload and a low ping last time I checked

Edit

Ping. 26ms
Download. 31.61 Mbps
Upload. 5.87 Mbps

My second monitor will display the server console if you also wanted to know

Then I would suggest maybe ask in game specific forums and see if they can help on a game by game basis as to what good download/upload speeds would be for running such a game server application; such as MineCraft. If it's only for maybe 8 players; then the requirements for ISP speeds shouldn't be very high at all.

Thanks. I also bookedmarked a article on what to do.

On my "smartphone" I nicknamd junkhoarder for reasons hs a ping of 15 a download of 56.55MBps and upload of 7.37 compared to (26)-(31.61)-(5.8)

Would hardware slow it down and (at times it just cuts off for no reason) stuff like that and parents who want to keep the "same" setup becasue being afraid of "Breaking" it.

Well WiFi will often be a bit slower compared to a PC thats on Wired connection.
For example lets say you have an ISP speed plan of 100 down / 20 up; generally a Phone via WiFi is not going to pull that off, but a PC via Wired Ethernet connection should have no troubles pulling that off.

For accuracy, best bet is do such speed tests on a PC using a wired connection.

And I would highly suggest Game PCs / Server be on Wired Connections; especially the Server, otherwise you'd pretty much be wasting your time; as the Pings would more then likely be terrible.

I do plan on wired. the original one is wired connection
Then again, that's where you really want to do any Ping / Speed Tests for accuracy purposes.

I will keep that in mind, Thank you.

I tried running a server on my sub-poptart and it only held 2 people with 4 PFS in a early minecraft version in 2010.(Lan)

If you do MineCraft server, then you'll definitely want to lookup the various commands and tweak; cause by default, MC will not use alot of RAM, and that is a real issue; but you can force it to use more.

I know. I just did not have the power to run it.

I run my own hosted gameserver. I use an intel G3420 processor with 16gigs of ram and mostly run a 240+mods minecraft server on it. Sometimes I even have an ark server on it when my friends want to play it. The whole build cost us about $250 and when split between the 6 people that play on it the most it wasn't that big of an investment.

Whether you get better performance running the gameserver on a separate servermachine instead of your gaming machine depends on the game but atleast for minecraft and ark it made a huge difference. None of us had a pc that could run the server and client at the same time without massive lag. But when we put it on the servermachine we all could play lag free just fine.

Oh and when picking a processor for the server machine you should look at the singlethread preformance as almost all gameservers are singlethreaded. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html has a nice list
You wouldn't want to pay $400 for a processor that is outperformed by a $100 processor in the task of running a minecraft server

As long as you have the bandwith for it(I have 20Mbps upload but aslong as you have more than 1Mbps per player you should be fine) and the patience to set it all up then it makes a world of a difference. And in the long run fi you play more than 2 different games its also cheaper than renting all those servers from renting services. And often these renting services have multiple clients sharing same hardware and the performance can be even worse than just hosting it on your gaming machine.
And as an added bonus you have a homeserver that can do a bunch of stuff other than the game servers. For example I run a teamspeak server and a bunch of other goodies and they haven't had any impact on running the game servers.
