What should I take into consideration when upgrading my CPU? I'm not tech savvy, so I don't know much about whether or not my motherboard would support it and whatnot.
Uhm you know that clock doesnt mean anything if you comapre 2 different chips. a high RPM sportcare engine isnt more powerfull as a low RPM nuclear submarine engine. Same goes for CPU's clockrate comparrison doesnt mean anything.
Also if compare a 1300x you have to compare it with a Pentium G4560/4600... and Kaby Lake and Ryzen are not even closely the same. Kaby Lake is more about single core performance and with it gaming eprformance while Ryzen is about multicore performance...
The 1300x isn't worth it by the way. Either drop to the 1200 or bump up to the 1400, likewise wait for the i3 8100 or bump to the i3 8350k which looks to be a bit of a beast for only 170.
Same with the CPUs in themselves, RyZEN uses AM4 while FX uses AM3 or AM3+ sockets, again not compatible.
Not to mention Intel which uses a new socket for pretty much every generation of CPUs.
Ram also has different sockets. You have DDR3 ram. However all boards that use newer CPU,s have sockets for DDR4 ram. As the sockets are different DDR3 and 4 ram aren't compatable in any way. Therefore you must upgrade mobo and ram along with CPU
