Does overclocking your ram fry the motherboard
So as I was building my pc, I finished and set the ram to its advertised speed. It then wouldn't go back to the screen where it asks for a boot drive, after resetting the bios, it still won't turn on... what happened?

It can but only in theory in an extreme overclocking situation, using sub-zero methods of cooling.

You simply put in wrong values for your RAM's speed and latencies, reset your BIOS and try the XMP profile.

Disconnect the PC from power and remove the CMOS battery then wait two minutes and put the battery back in.

What are your PC specs? If you bought anything recent you can simply select a XMP or AMP profile and the RAM would be set to the correct frequency, timings and voltage automatically.

I've already reset the bios, it won't turn back on properly

i once had the error, that i had to do a cmos reset several times. it was weird, but after about 3 times of cmos reset, i had sth on my monitor. what can be? often it is a trouble with the gfx board...maybe sth else. i dont think your pc is destroyed. imho.

I've reset cmos lots of times now, the fans start up but it doesn't send a signal and pressing del doesnt work

I doubt it was the RAM that's cooked the motherboard. This sound more like a damaged CPU socket.

Try leaving just one ram module installed. If that doesn't work try another one.

But since it all happened after the ram, surely it would be that.

Not necessarily. Last time I damaged a CPU socket, the PC ran normally for a couple of hours before it failed completely.

A bad overclock on ram will simply make your pc reboot over and over. The only way to fry it would be to pump it with a ton of voltage. ie over 1.4v.

Hmm, I know the CPU isn't damaged, it must be the socket. I'll call MSI
